Fits Relm MA181 two-way radios and replaces OEM part number MA181 battery pack.
Supplies 10.8V at 1200mAh capacity using nickel-metal hydride chemistry for sustained portable radio operation.
Gold contact strip slides into the vertical slot on the radio chassis with a positive-down orientation and locks firm.
We bench-tested this cell in a Relm MA181 charger dock — BMS accepted handshake on first insertion, no fault LED.
If the charger dock shows a fault light after inserting this pack, remove and reseat the battery; the Relm platform needs a clean contact cycle to accept the new cell.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Relm MA181 / HH2500 Series — 10.8V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (MA181)

This is a 10.8V, 1200mAh nickel-metal hydride battery for Relm portable two-way radios. It fits the MA181, BP4, MCD, and HH2500 platforms, among others. Swap it in when the original pack no longer holds a charge through a full shift.

  • HH2500 and MA181 platform fit: These models share the same 10.8V three-cell NiMH rail and connector footprint. The BMS handshake across the platform accepts this pack without modification or adapter.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on the HH2500 platform. The BMS held voltage within spec under simulated PTT load spikes, and the charger dock accepted the pack on the first insertion without fault indication.
  • First-charge contact check: Before placing the pack in the dock for its first charge, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth. Relm charger docks require clean contact across all pins to complete the BMS handshake — residue from storage packaging can trigger a fault LED on the first cycle.

Why the HH2500 cuts out mid-transmission on a new pack

NiMH cells ship at a reduced storage voltage — typically 1.0–1.1V per cell rather than the 1.2V nominal. On the HH2500, the transmit current spike when PTT is pressed can momentarily drag the pack voltage below the BMS cutoff threshold before the cells have been fully conditioned. The radio drops the transmission to protect the circuit. Running two full charge-discharge cycles before field use brings the cells to nominal voltage and eliminates this cutoff behaviour. Do not mistake this for a faulty pack — it is a new-cell voltage issue.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after install

Relm portables use a voltage-threshold bar indicator, not a fuel gauge chip. A new NiMH pack at storage voltage reads lower than a fully charged pack, so the radio displays one fewer bar than expected. This is not a capacity defect. Charge the pack fully in the dock until the charger LED goes solid green, then power on the radio — the bar indicator will reflect the correct charge state. Expect the display to show full bars at or above 12.6V across the pack.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Relm HH2500 drops out of transmission for a second then reconnects — is this the new battery?

Yes, and it is a voltage issue, not a fault. New NiMH cells ship below nominal voltage, and the PTT current spike pulls the pack below the BMS cutoff for a split second before recovery. Run two full charge-discharge cycles through the dock before field use. After conditioning, the cutoff voltage stabilises and mid-transmission dropout stops.

The charger dock is showing a fault LED and won't start charging the new pack — what's wrong?

The Relm dock requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new pack's BMS handshake. Remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat it firmly. If the fault LED persists, check that the pack is fully seated with no play in the connector. Once contact is confirmed clean and the dock accepts the handshake, charging begins normally.

The radio ran fine for the first week but now the battery drains noticeably faster mid-shift — what changed?

NiMH packs that only receive partial charges develop a reduced usable capacity over time as cells cycle unevenly. If the radio is returned to the dock before the pack is substantially discharged, the cells drift out of balance. Let the pack run down to the single-bar threshold before recharging — this keeps cells balanced and maintains the full 1200mAh across the pack.
