  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on the Touch Pro HD platform. The BMS handshook correctly with the charge IC, accepted current without tripping overcurrent protection, and held voltage above the modem-load threshold throughout the discharge curve.
  • Fuel gauge recalibration on first use: After installing a new cell, run one complete discharge down to auto-shutoff before charging fully. The Touch Pro HD's fuel gauge IC reads the new cell's discharge curve on that first cycle — skipping it causes the OS to report incorrect percentages for days afterward.

Why the Touch Pro HD reports wrong battery percentage after a cell swap

The Touch Pro HD uses a coulomb-counting fuel gauge IC that builds its percentage model from a stored discharge curve. When you install a new cell, the IC still references the old, degraded curve — so it maps the new cell's higher capacity onto the wrong scale. This causes the OS to show full charge well before the cell is actually full, or to jump from 40% to shutdown with no warning. One complete discharge-to-shutoff cycle followed by a full charge forces the IC to relearn the curve against the actual cell. After that cycle, percentage readings stabilise.

Sudden shutdown at 20–30% remaining on the Touch Pro HD

This happens when the cell voltage drops below the modem or display load threshold before the fuel gauge reaches 0%. The Touch Pro HD's processor and radio draw surge current during active calls or data sessions, and an aged or deeply discharged cell cannot sustain voltage under that load — even when the gauge still shows charge remaining. A replacement cell with a healthy internal resistance curve resolves this; the voltage stays above the BMS cutoff floor (approximately 3.0V under load) through the discharge range. If the new cell still shuts down early on the first few cycles, complete the fuel gauge recalibration cycle before drawing conclusions.

Most likely the BMS has locked out due to deep discharge below 2.5V per cell, which triggers a protection cutoff to prevent cell damage. A replacement cell resolves this because the stored unit is almost certainly below recovery threshold. If you're testing the new cell and still get no response, hold the power button for 15–20 seconds with the battery seated — some Windows Mobile bootloaders require a hard reset to initialise a new cell on first contact.

The Touch Pro HD feels warm near the battery compartment while charging — is that normal with a new cell?

Some heat during the first few charge cycles on a new cell is expected. A fresh high-impedance cell causes the charge IC to work harder to push current through, generating more heat than a broken-in cell. The warmth should reduce noticeably after two or three full charge cycles as internal resistance settles. If the device stays hot to the touch or cuts charging short repeatedly, check that the battery contacts are fully seated and clean — poor contact forces the IC to retry at higher voltage.

The percentage on my Touch Pro HD jumps around erratically — 60% one minute, 35% the next — after fitting the new battery.

This is the fuel gauge IC recalibrating against the new cell's discharge curve after years of mapping to the old degraded cell. The coulomb counter's stored model no longer matches the actual cell chemistry, so readings are unstable until it relearns. Run one full discharge to auto-shutoff followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% — do not top up in short sessions during this cycle. After that single complete cycle, the percentage display should stabilise.
