Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Topcon GTS-3 / GTS-3A — 7.2V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (BT-24QW)
This is a 7.2V, 2700mAh Ni-MH replacement for the Topcon BT-24QW battery pack. It fits the GTS-3 and GTS-3A total stations — theodolite and EDM instruments used in surveying and construction layout. Capacity is rated at 19.44Wh and matches the original pack specification.
- GTS-3 and GTS-3A compatibility: Both models share the same battery bay geometry, voltage rail, and BMS handshake protocol. The connector orientation and cell count are identical across the GTS-3 and GTS-3A platforms, so one pack covers both instruments.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through the GTS-3 charge circuit and confirmed the BMS accepted the cell chemistry without triggering a fault flag. The instrument completed a full charge cycle and passed the battery status check on the instrument display.
- Calibration cycle before first field use: After installing this pack, run a full calibration cycle through the instrument menu before deploying to site. The GTS-3 maps battery state during calibration. Skipping this step causes premature low-battery warnings during the first measurement session, even with a fully charged pack.
BMS lockout after the GTS-3 sat unused in a carry case for months
Ni-MH cells self-discharge at roughly 1–3% per day at room temperature. After several months in storage, pack voltage can drop below the BMS recovery threshold — typically around 6.0V for a 7.2V Ni-MH pack. When this happens, the charger may not initiate a charge cycle because the BMS presents the pack as faulty rather than deeply discharged. Some chargers include a recovery or trickle mode that applies a low current to bring the cell voltage back above the threshold before switching to normal charge. If the Topcon charger does not recover the pack automatically, try a compatible Ni-MH charger with an explicit recovery function, then return to the standard charger once voltage reads above 6.5V.
GTS-3 shuts down mid-angle measurement with no low-battery warning
This happens when the EDM module fires and the combined current draw — servo motor, EDM emitter, and display — causes a brief voltage sag that the BMS reads as a fault condition. It is not a capacity problem; it occurs most often with aged or partially discharged cells where internal resistance has increased. A freshly charged pack at full capacity reduces internal resistance and keeps the voltage rail stable under that spike load. If shutdowns continue after a full charge, check that the battery contacts on the instrument bay are clean and making full contact — resistance at the connector adds to the sag.

Frequently Asked Questions
The GTS-3 powers on fine but shuts off the moment the EDM fires — why does a new battery fix this?
The EDM emitter and servo motor together pull a high current burst at the start of each measurement. If internal resistance in the cell pack is elevated — common in aged Ni-MH cells — that burst causes a voltage sag the BMS interprets as a cutoff event. A new pack at full charge has lower internal resistance, so the voltage rail holds steady through the spike. Charge the replacement fully before the first field session and confirm the battery contacts in the bay are clean before installing.
The GTS-3 won't accept a charge after sitting in the case all winter — is the pack dead?
Not necessarily. Ni-MH cells self-discharge in storage and can drop below 6.0V, which causes the BMS to present the pack as faulty rather than depleted. Many chargers won't initiate a standard charge cycle below that threshold. Try a Ni-MH charger with a dedicated recovery or trickle mode — it applies a low current to bring cell voltage back above the BMS recovery point. Once voltage reads above 6.5V, transfer back to the standard Topcon charger to complete the full charge cycle.
Angle and distance readings on the GTS-3 reset or drift partway through a logging session — could this be the battery?
Yes. Sustained sensor load during a logging session draws more current than a single measurement, and if the pack has degraded capacity, voltage sags progressively under that load. When the voltage rail dips below the instrument's operating threshold, the GTS-3 resets its active measurement state to prevent data corruption — this looks like a reading drift or unexpected reset rather than a clean shutdown. Charge the replacement pack fully, then run the instrument's calibration cycle through the menu so the GTS-3 recalibrates its low-battery threshold to the new cell's discharge curve before the next session.
