This is a 2.4V, 700mAh Ni-MH rechargeable battery for the Motorola MBP20 and MBP161 series parent unit. It fits the MBP20, MBP161, and MBP161TIMER audio baby monitors. The parent unit is a handheld receiver — this battery is what keeps it portable and untethered from the wall.

  • MBP20 and MBP161 series compatibility: These three models share the same parent unit housing, the same 2.4V battery bay, and the same connector layout. One battery spec covers all three — no adapter or wiring change needed.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on the MBP20 parent unit. The battery accepted a full charge without the BMS triggering an early cutoff, and the unit held its wireless link to the transmitter throughout.

Why the MBP20 parent unit loses wireless connection after a battery replacement

The MBP20 parent unit stores its link to the transmitter in volatile memory. When battery voltage drops to zero — which happens during a swap — that pairing data is lost. This is not a fault with the new battery. It is how the unit's radio module initialises from a cold start. After fitting the replacement battery, charge the parent unit fully before attempting to re-pair, since the radio transmit power is voltage-sensitive and a low cell may not complete the handshake reliably.

Parent unit screen stays on all night and battery is flat by morning

The MBP20 parent unit draws significantly more current with the backlit display active than in audio-only mode. Leaving the screen on overnight is a sustained high draw that a 700mAh Ni-MH cell was not sized to handle across a full eight-hour stretch. Enable the screen timeout or VOX mode so the display only activates on sound detection. With the screen off and VOX active, the standby current drops sharply and the battery lasts through a normal night cycle.

Intermittent signal drop on a freshly charged battery usually points to a Ni-MH cell that has lost capacity through shallow cycling — it reads full but can't sustain the radio's transmit current under load. The voltage sags briefly during transmission bursts, the radio loses sync, and then recovers. Condition the battery by running it through two or three full discharge-and-charge cycles. If drop-outs stop after conditioning, the cell was the cause.

Night vision on the camera unit stopped working after we replaced the parent unit battery — what happened?

Night vision on the camera unit runs independently of the parent unit battery — replacing the parent battery has no effect on the camera's IR LEDs. What likely happened is the camera lost its pairing during the swap and is now running in a default state with certain features inactive. Re-pair the parent unit to the camera following the MBP161 or MBP20 pairing sequence in the manual, then check that the camera's IR mode is enabled in the parent unit menu.

Radio range on the MBP20 parent unit is directly tied to transmit voltage. If the replacement battery was not given a full initial charge, the cell voltage is too low to drive the radio at full power. Charge the parent unit for the full charge cycle specified in the manual — typically until the charge indicator clears — then retest range. If range is still reduced after a complete charge, run one full discharge-recharge cycle to allow the Ni-MH cell to reach its rated 2.4V output.
