Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Intermec Pen Key 6210 / 4000 / 4500 / 5000 — 6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (317-084-00)
This is a 6V 2000mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Intermec Pen Key 6210, 4000, 4500, and 5000 handheld data terminals. It replaces OEM part numbers 317-084-00, 317-084-001, 317-084-002, 317-084-003, and 406929. The pack slots into the same bay as the original and uses the same six-cell Ni-MH configuration at 12Wh total capacity.
- Pen Key 4000–6210 platform fit: These four models share the same battery bay dimensions, six-pin contact layout, and 6V nominal voltage rail. The BMS handshake across this series uses the same thermistor line, so one pack covers all four terminals without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through repeated scan-trigger inrush events on a Pen Key 6210. The BMS held the voltage rail steady through burst scanning and showed no premature cutoff at the load spikes typical of laser trigger activation.
- First-shift cradle protocol: After installing this pack, seat the terminal in its cradle and run a full charge cycle before taking it onto the warehouse floor. Scan trigger inrush current is highest when the cell is near minimum charge, and a pre-charged pack prevents false BMS trips on the very first shift.
Cradle showing a charging error on a new pack
The Pen Key cradle uses spring-loaded contacts to communicate charge status and thermistor data from the pack. When contact resistance rises — from oxidation on the pack terminals or debris in the cradle bay — the charger interprets the signal as a fault and throws a charging error. This is not a battery defect. Wipe the gold contacts on the battery with a dry cloth, blow out the cradle bay, then reseat the pack firmly until it clicks. The error clears once contact resistance drops below the charger's threshold, typically under 0.5 ohms.
Scanner losing wireless connection during a rapid scan burst
During a fast scan burst, the Pen Key draws current simultaneously from the laser or imager and the wireless radio — both spike at the same moment. If the battery's internal resistance is elevated, this combined inrush causes a momentary voltage sag that drops the radio below its minimum operating threshold, dropping the wireless link. A fully charged, fresh pack keeps the voltage rail above 5.4V through the burst. If dropouts persist on a fully charged pack, measure the terminal voltage under load — if it sags below 5.2V, the cells are degraded and the pack needs replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Pen Key 6210 isn't reading barcodes after I put the new battery in — what's wrong?
The laser or imager needs the cell at or near full charge before it delivers enough current to fire correctly. A fresh pack shipped in storage state may not have enough charge to sustain the laser trigger inrush on the first use. Seat the terminal in the cradle and let it charge fully before scanning. Once the pack is at full charge, the laser fires at rated power and reads normally.
The Pen Key cradle is flashing a fault light and won't charge the new pack — is the charger broken?
In most cases the charger is fine — the fault is contact resistance between the pack terminals and the cradle's spring contacts. Oxidation or dust on either surface breaks the thermistor circuit, and the charger reads it as a pack fault. Wipe the battery's gold contacts with a dry cloth, clear debris from the cradle bay, and reseat the pack with firm downward pressure until it locks. The fault light should clear within 30 seconds of a clean connection.
The scanner feels noticeably warm after an extended pick-and-pack shift — is that normal?
Sustained combined draw from the wireless radio and repeated scan triggers generates heat inside the Pen Key's enclosed housing, and some warmth at the end of a long shift is expected. What's not normal is a pack that is hot to the touch or one that the BMS has cut off mid-shift due to thermal overload. If the terminal shuts itself off before the shift ends and the housing is very hot, reduce continuous scan frequency and allow the unit a short rest. Check that the battery contacts and housing vents are free of dust, which traps heat and accelerates thermal cutoff.
