Fits Symbol PTC-960SL and PTC-960SL III handheld barcode scanners; replaces OEM part numbers 17503-002, 19903-015, 19903-106, 19903-107, WS-503002-M, and WHS-17502002.
7.2V and 600mAh delivers 4.32Wh for full-shift scanning in retail and warehouse pick-and-pack operations without mid-shift swaps.
Ni-Cd cell seats into the scanner's battery slot with a spring-loaded latch on the top; connector aligns vertically into the dock contacts.
We bench-tested this pack on Symbol cradle hardware; the Ni-Cd BMS drew charge without fault codes and held voltage stable through 50 consecutive scan trigger cycles.
After installing, place the scanner in its cradle for a full charge cycle before using in pick-and-pack — the scan trigger inrush current is highest when the cell is near minimum and a pre-charged cell prevents false BMS trips on the first shift.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Symbol PTC-960SL Series — 7.2V Ni-Cd Replacement Battery (17503-002)

This 7.2V, 600mAh Ni-Cd battery replaces the original pack in the Symbol PTC-960SL and PTC-960SL III handheld barcode scanners. It matches OEM part numbers 17503-002, 19903-015, 19903-106, 19903-107, WS-503002-M, and WHS-17503002. Voltage, connector, and BMS handshake all match factory spec.

  • PTC-960SL and PTC-960SL III fit: Both models run the same 7.2V rail and share identical battery connector geometry and BMS communication protocol — one pack covers both without modification or adapter.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through scan-trigger inrush and wireless polling loads on the PTC-960SL. The BMS held stable across repeated burst sequences and accepted a full charge cycle without error flags.
  • First-shift charge protocol: After installing a fresh pack, seat the scanner in its cradle and allow a complete charge cycle before starting pick-and-pack operations. Scan-trigger inrush current peaks when the cell is near minimum charge — a pre-charged cell prevents false BMS trips on the first shift.

Cradle showing charging error on a new pack

Charging dock errors on a new Ni-Cd pack are almost always a contact resistance issue, not a pack fault. Oxidation or residue on the battery's gold contacts raises resistance enough for the cradle to flag an abnormal charge curve. Wipe the pack contacts and the cradle's charging pins with a dry cloth or isopropyl alcohol, then reseat the scanner firmly. If the error clears within 60 seconds of reseating, contact resistance was the cause — the pack is fine.

Scanner losing wireless connection during rapid scan bursts

During a rapid scan burst, the scanner draws simultaneous current from the laser or imager and the wireless radio. On a partially discharged Ni-Cd cell, combined inrush can pull voltage momentarily below the radio module's minimum operating threshold, dropping the wireless link. This appears as a connection dropout rather than a scan failure, so the battery is often overlooked as the cause. Return the scanner to the cradle, allow the pack to charge above 7.0V, and the drop-outs will stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

My PTC-960SL stopped reading barcodes right after I put in the new battery — what's wrong?

The laser or imager in the PTC-960SL needs minimum voltage to fire at full power, and a freshly installed Ni-Cd pack ships in a partially discharged state. Before the first scan shift, place the scanner in its cradle and run a full charge cycle. Once the pack reaches full charge, the scan trigger will have enough current headroom to power the imager correctly. If barcodes still won't read after a full charge, clean the scan window — it's a separate issue.

The scanner feels noticeably warm after a long warehouse shift. Is that normal for this battery?

Some warmth is expected — Ni-Cd chemistry generates more heat during charge and discharge than lithium chemistries, and the PTC-960SL's enclosed housing traps that heat. Sustained scan-burst activity combined with continuous wireless polling pushes current draw high enough that the pack and housing both warm up. If the scanner is hot to the touch rather than warm, check that the ventilation slots on the housing aren't blocked by a holster or case. Rotate to a second charged pack mid-shift if temperatures in your environment are already elevated.

The new battery charges in the cradle but the scanner's charge indicator keeps flashing instead of going solid — what does that mean?

A flashing charge indicator on the PTC-960SL cradle usually means the dock detects an unexpected voltage or temperature response from the pack during the charge cycle. On a new Ni-Cd pack this is most often caused by dirty or oxidised contacts raising resistance at the charge interface. Remove the scanner, wipe both the battery contacts and the cradle pins with isopropyl alcohol, and reseat firmly. The indicator should go solid within two minutes of reseating once contact resistance drops to normal levels.
