Fits Telxon PTC-960SL and PTC-960SL III barcode scanners; replaces OEM part numbers 17503-002, 19903-015, 19903-106, 19903-107, WS-503002-M, and WHS-17503002.
7.2V at 600mAh means this Ni-Cd cell delivers the scan trigger current and wireless radio draw without dropping voltage mid-shift on high-frequency barcode reads.
Connector slides into the vertical slot on the scanner rear with a single locking tab; orient the positive terminal toward the spring contact and seat until the tab catches flush.
We bench-tested this cell in a PTC-960SL with continuous scan bursts and wireless polling; the BMS delivered steady voltage through inrush spikes with no cutoff events or contact noise.
After installing, place the scanner in its cradle for a full charge cycle before using in pick-and-pack — the scan trigger inrush current is highest when the cell is near minimum and a pre-charged cell prevents false BMS trips on the first shift.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Telxon PTC-960SL Series — 7.2V Ni-Cd Replacement Battery (17503-002)

This 7.2V, 600mAh Ni-Cd battery replaces the original pack in the Telxon PTC-960SL and PTC-960SL III portable data collection terminals. These handheld barcode scanners are used across retail, warehousing, and inventory environments where scan uptime directly affects shift output. Voltage and capacity match the OEM specification exactly.

  • PTC-960SL and PTC-960SL III coverage: Both models share the same 7.2V battery bay, connector pinout, and charge management circuit. A single replacement pack covers either unit without modification or adapter.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and discharge cycles on the PTC-960SL platform. The BMS accepted the cell stack without fault codes, and the charge circuit reached full termination voltage without interruption.
  • First-shift preparation: Place the scanner in its cradle for a full charge cycle before putting it into active picking. The scan trigger draws a short inrush current each time it fires — starting the shift on a fully charged cell prevents false BMS trips that can misread as a faulty pack.

Cradle charging error on a new pack in the PTC-960SL dock

The PTC-960SL cradle reads pack voltage through spring contacts on the base of the terminal. If those contacts carry oxidation or debris from a worn-out original battery, the dock can flag a charge fault on a new cell that is otherwise fine. Wipe the gold contacts on both the pack and the cradle with a dry lint-free cloth before reseating. If the error clears after a firm reseat, the fault was contact resistance, not the battery.

Scanner dropping wireless connection during rapid scan bursts

The PTC-960SL fires both the barcode laser and the RF transmitter within the same short window during a rapid scan sequence. That combined inrush pulls more current than either subsystem alone. A cell with degraded capacity can't sustain the voltage rail through that spike, and the radio drops its connection to the access point. If the scanner reconnects on its own after a pause, the battery is the most likely cause — check resting voltage with a multimeter; a healthy Ni-Cd cell at rest should read at or above 7.2V.

Frequently Asked Questions

My PTC-960SL scanner won't read barcodes right after I swapped in the new battery — is it broken?

It's not broken. The laser or imager in the PTC-960SL needs the battery above a minimum voltage threshold before it fires at full power — straight out of packaging, the cell may not be at that level. Place the scanner in its cradle and run a full charge cycle before attempting scans. After a full charge, the laser fires at rated power and barcode reads return to normal.

The cradle is showing a charging fault with the new pack but worked fine with the old one — what's wrong?

The dock contacts on a heavily used PTC-960SL cradle accumulate oxidation over time, and a new pack with clean contacts can actually expose that resistance more clearly than a worn original. Remove the terminal, wipe the spring contacts on the cradle and the contact pads on the battery with a dry lint-free cloth, then reseat firmly. If the charging indicator goes green after that, the fault was contact resistance — not the replacement pack.

After a full shift the scanner feels warm and the battery drains faster than expected — is this a defective cell?

Warmth during a long shift is normal on the PTC-960SL because the scanner runs both the wireless radio and the barcode laser continuously inside a compact housing with little airflow. That sustained dual draw adds heat and accelerates discharge compared to light intermittent use. The pack is not defective if it feels warm but still completes the shift. If discharge is noticeably short, check that the cradle is reaching full charge termination — measure pack voltage at the end of charge, which should be at or above 8.4V for a healthy 7.2V Ni-Cd pack.
