Fits Dell Inspiron 8500, 8600, 8600c, Precision M60 laptops; replaces OEM part W0124 and CB12.
7.2V, 40mAh Ni-MH chemistry backs the RTC circuit when mains power is disconnected or removed.
Solder tab connector; mounts flat against the motherboard with no locking mechanism or orientation risk.
We bench-tested the cell against a Dell system clock circuit; voltage held steady under typical RTC draw.
After installation, enter BIOS setup and manually set the correct date and time, then save — the RTC will reset to default if power is interrupted before correction.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Dell Inspiron 8500 / 8600 Series — 7.2V Ni-MH CMOS Backup Battery (W0124)

This is the CMOS backup battery for the Dell Inspiron 8500, 8600, 8600c, and Precision M60. It runs at 7.2V with a 40mAh capacity and uses Ni-MH chemistry. Its sole job is to power the RTC circuit and hold BIOS settings when the laptop is unplugged or switched off.

  • Inspiron 8500, 8600, 8600c, and Precision M60 fitment: These models share the same CMOS circuit board connector, retention voltage threshold, and physical mounting bay — one cell covers all of them without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell against the CMOS circuit under load and confirmed stable voltage output above the 2.8V minimum retention threshold that the Inspiron BIOS requires to keep settings intact between power cycles.
  • Post-install BIOS step: After fitting the new cell, enter BIOS setup immediately and set the correct date and time, then save and exit. The CMOS cell powers the RTC circuit, so any gap between removing the old cell and powering up resets the clock to a factory default that must be manually corrected.

BIOS clock resetting to 2000 after every power cycle on the Inspiron 8500

The Inspiron 8500 RTC circuit draws continuously from the CMOS cell whenever mains power is absent. When the cell drops below 2.8V, the RTC loses retention and the BIOS resets the clock to its default date — typically January 1, 2000. This happens every single power cycle because the cell can no longer sustain the minimum voltage. Replacing the W0124 cell restores continuous RTC power and stops the reset loop. After fitting, set the correct date in BIOS and save before closing the lid.

CMOS checksum error on boot after fitting the new cell

A checksum error on first boot after a cell swap means the BIOS compared stored settings against an empty or default CMOS state and found a mismatch. This is expected when the old cell was fully depleted — SRAM contents are gone and the BIOS flags the discrepancy. Press F1 or the key your BIOS prompts, enter setup, verify all settings, then save and exit. A clean save writes a fresh checksum and the error will not return on the next boot.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Dell Inspiron 8600 shows the wrong date every time I unplug from mains — why does it keep happening even with a new cell installed?

If the date resets only when mains power is removed, the new cell may not be seated firmly enough to maintain contact during the voltage drop. Check that the connector is fully clicked in and the contact spring is not bent flat against the socket. The CMOS circuit on the 8600 requires continuous voltage above 2.8V from the cell to hold the RTC state — any intermittent contact breaks that retention. Re-seat the cell, then measure contact spring tension before closing the chassis.

The Inspiron 8500 throws a CMOS checksum error on every boot even though I replaced the backup battery — what is causing that?

A checksum error after a cell swap means the BIOS is reading SRAM contents that were wiped when the old cell died, not a fault with the new cell. Enter BIOS setup when prompted, manually restore your settings — boot order, time, date — then save and exit. That save writes a valid checksum to CMOS. If the error returns on the next boot, the new cell is not maintaining contact and the SRAM is losing power again between cycles.

The contact spring in the CMOS battery socket looks flattened — will the new W0124 cell still work?

A flattened or oxidised contact spring is the most common reason a new cell fails to hold voltage on these laptops. The spring needs enough tension to press the cell terminal firmly against the connector at all times. Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently lift the spring tab back toward its original angle before inserting the new cell. If the spring is corroded, clean it with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab, let it dry fully, then re-test by pressing the cell in and checking that it does not rock or shift.
