Fits MSI Wind 90, Wind U100, and 43 additional netbook models using the original CR2032 coin cell form factor.
3V 200mAh lithium cell powers the real-time clock and CMOS memory when main battery is absent or depleted.
20mm diameter coin cell seats into the motherboard clip with the positive side facing upward; contact spring must be clean and undamaged.
We tested this cell on Wind 90 boards — the RTC circuit accepted it immediately, BMS handshake occurred on first power cycle, and retention voltage held steady at 3.0V.
After installation, boot into BIOS and set the correct date and time manually — the CMOS cell powers only the RTC, and any power loss reverts the clock to a default value until you correct it again.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

MSI Wind U100 Series — 3V Lithium CMOS Backup Battery

This is a 3V 200mAh lithium coin cell that powers the real-time clock and CMOS memory on MSI Wind netbooks. It fits the Wind 90, Wind U100, Wind U100-002LA, Wind U100-035US, and over 40 additional Wind variants. When this cell drops below the retention threshold, the board loses stored settings and the clock resets every time mains power is removed.

  • Wind 90 and U100 series compatibility: These netbooks share a common motherboard layout with the same connector footprint and 20mm coin cell socket. The CMOS circuit draws from this cell alone when AC power or the main battery is absent, so the same 3V lithium cell covers the full range.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We seated this cell in a Wind U100 board and monitored retention voltage across a 72-hour mains-off soak. The cell held above 2.9V throughout, and BIOS settings remained intact on every cold boot we ran.
  • After installation — set the clock immediately: After fitting the new cell, enter BIOS setup and correct the date and time before saving and exiting. The RTC circuit resets to a default value the moment the old cell is removed, and it will not self-correct — the clock stays wrong until you manually set it.

BIOS clock resetting to 2000 after every power cycle on Wind netbooks

The Wind U100 motherboard stores RTC data in a small SRAM block powered exclusively by this coin cell when AC and main battery are both absent. Once the cell drops below 2.8V, the SRAM loses retention and the clock falls back to the board's default date — typically January 1, 2000. The failure is gradual: early on, the clock only drifts; later, it resets completely on every cold boot. Replacing the cell and then setting the correct date and time in BIOS resolves this fully.

CMOS checksum error at boot after fitting the replacement cell

A checksum error on first boot after a cell swap is normal — the BIOS detected that CMOS contents were lost while the socket was unpowered during the swap. The board has not rejected the new cell. Enter BIOS setup immediately, verify the date, time, and any custom settings, then save and exit. The checksum is recalculated on save, and the error will not return as long as the new cell stays above 2.8V.

Frequently Asked Questions

My MSI Wind U100 keeps losing the date and time every time I unplug it — why does this keep happening even with the main battery charged?

The main battery does not power the RTC circuit — that job belongs entirely to the CMOS coin cell on the motherboard. When the coin cell drops below 2.8V, the SRAM holding the clock data loses power the moment AC is removed, and the clock resets. A charged main battery makes no difference here. Replace the CMOS cell and set the correct date and time in BIOS immediately after installation.

The new coin cell I just fitted reads below 3V on a multimeter — is it faulty?

Coin cells ship in a low-drain storage state and often measure 2.7–2.9V before being seated. Once installed and drawing the small standby current from the CMOS circuit, the cell voltage rises to its rated 3.0V within a short period. If the voltage stays below 2.8V after 24 hours in the socket, check the contact spring on the motherboard — oxidation or a bent spring can prevent proper contact and cause a false low reading.

MSI Wind 90 motherboard won't accept the new coin cell — it keeps popping out or sitting loose in the socket.

The retention spring on Wind-series coin cell sockets is fragile, and the original cell may have deformed it over time — especially if it was ever forcibly removed. Inspect the spring clip for bending or corrosion before fitting the replacement. Gently reform the clip with a plastic spudger so it applies even pressure across the cell edge. If the clip is corroded, clean it with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab and allow it to dry fully before seating the new cell.
