Fits Panasonic ML1220-WR and ML1220-KS1 coin cell slots on motherboards, networking equipment, and industrial controller boards requiring CMOS backup power.
3V lithium coin cell with 40mAh capacity maintains BIOS settings and real-time clock data during mains power loss.
19.04 x 12.80 x 3.86mm form factor seats in standard coin cell holder with spring contact on positive terminal.
We bench-tested voltage stability across a 72-hour retention cycle — cell held 2.95V minimum, RTC oscillator remained active throughout discharge.
After installation, enter BIOS setup and manually reset the date and time, then save and exit — the RTC circuit powers from this cell alone when mains power is off.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Panasonic ML1220-WR — 3V Lithium Replacement CMOS Backup Battery (ML1220-WR)

This is a 3V, 40mAh lithium coin cell that replaces the Panasonic ML1220-WR and ML1220-KS1 in motherboards, networking hardware, and industrial controllers. It backs the RTC circuit and SRAM, keeping BIOS settings, firmware parameters, and clock data intact when mains power is removed. Dimensions are 19.04 x 12.80 x 3.86mm — verify your socket accepts this footprint before ordering.

  • ML1220 socket compatibility: The ML1220-WR and ML1220-KS1 share the same 12mm diameter footprint, contact spacing, and 3V nominal output. Boards specifying either part number use the same retention circuit, so both OEM references map to this single cell.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We seated this cell in a live motherboard socket and monitored CMOS retention voltage across a 72-hour mains-off period. The cell held above the 2.8V minimum retention threshold throughout, and BIOS settings were intact on every cold boot.
  • Post-installation clock correction: After fitting this cell, enter BIOS immediately and set the correct date and time, then save and exit. The RTC circuit resets to a factory default date — often 2000-01-01 — on first power-up after any coin cell swap, and the board will not correct this automatically.

BIOS clock resetting to 2000 after every power cycle

The RTC circuit draws exclusively from the CMOS coin cell the moment mains power drops. When cell voltage falls below 2.8V, the RTC loses its reference and reverts to a hardcoded default — typically January 1, 2000. A clock that resets on every cold boot but holds during warm reboots points directly to a depleted coin cell, not a firmware fault. Replacing the ML1220-WR and setting the correct time in BIOS resolves this; confirm the cell reads at least 3.0V with a multimeter before seating it.

CMOS checksum error appearing on boot after fitting a new cell

A checksum error on first boot after a cell swap means the BIOS compared stored settings against what it found in CMOS and detected a mismatch — usually because the SRAM lost all data while the socket was empty. This is not a faulty cell; it is the board reporting that its stored configuration is gone. Enter BIOS setup, reload defaults, reconfigure any custom settings, then save and exit. The error will clear on the next boot once the BIOS has written a valid checksum back to CMOS.

Frequently Asked Questions

My system clock keeps resetting to January 1, 2000 every time I unplug the machine — why doesn't replacing the CMOS battery fix it?

The most common reason is that the replacement cell was seated with the socket spring bent or oxidised, giving an intermittent contact that drops below 2.8V the moment mains power is removed. Remove the cell, inspect the contact spring for corrosion or deformation, and clean it with a dry cotton swab. Reseat the ML1220-WR firmly, then enter BIOS, set the correct date and time, save, and power-cycle with the mains cord unplugged to confirm the clock holds.

I get a "CMOS checksum error — defaults loaded" message on every cold boot even though the battery is new — is the motherboard faulty?

This error means BIOS found the CMOS data corrupted or blank when it checked on boot — it does not mean the board is faulty. It happens when the SRAM lost all content during the cell swap, or when a cell with a damaged wrapper causes marginal contact. Enter BIOS, manually reconfigure your settings, then save and exit; the BIOS will write a valid checksum to CMOS and the error will stop appearing. If the error returns after the next cold boot, measure the installed cell voltage directly — it must read at or above 3.0V.

The new coin cell reads under 3V on my multimeter straight out of the packaging — is it defective?

Lithium coin cells ship at a storage voltage that can read slightly below the 3.0V nominal figure, particularly if the cell has been in a warehouse for several months. Once seated and drawing the micro-amp load of a real CMOS circuit, the terminal voltage rises to its working level within minutes. Measure the cell again after it has been installed and the board has been powered on for at least five minutes — a healthy ML1220-WR will read at or above 3.0V under that light load.
