NiMH cells ship in a partially discharged state from storage. On the first one or two cycles, the pack will not deliver full rated capacity — this is normal electrochemical behaviour, not a fault. Capacity builds cycle by cycle as the cells condition. By cycles 3 to 5, output should be at or near the rated 600mAh. Run the handset through full charge and full discharge cycles without interruption to accelerate this.

If the base station shows a charging error or refuses to recognise the new pack, the NiMH voltage has likely dropped below the base unit's charge acceptance threshold during storage. Once the resting voltage clears 3.2V, reseat the handset in the base — the charge indicator should recover.
