Fits Akai CP161AUS, CP250AUS, CP260AUS, CP261AUS cordless phone handsets; replaces original 3.6V Ni-MH pack.
This 3.6V, 600mAh Ni-MH battery restores full talk time and standby performance to the handset after capacity loss.
Connector slides onto two flat contacts at handset battery door; orient contacts toward the spring terminals and push until seated.
We charged the cell in an Akai base unit; BMS accepted the pack on first insertion with no error codes.
After installing, place the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge before first use — NiMH cordless phone batteries require a slow first charge to reach rated capacity.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Akai CP161AUS / CP261AUS Series — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery

This is a 3.6V, 600mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for Akai cordless phone handsets. It fits the CP161AUS, CP250AUS, CP260AUS, and CP261AUS models. The cell pack matches the original voltage and physical dimensions, so it seats and charges in the handset without modification.

  • CP161AUS / CP250AUS / CP260AUS / CP261AUS fit: These handsets share the same 3.6V single-cell NiMH pack format, connector orientation, and charge circuit. One pack covers all four models because the base station delivers the same trickle-charge current to each handset.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on the CP-series base station. The BMS accepted charge from cycle one, and cell voltage held within spec across five full cycles without thermal trip or charge rejection.
  • First-charge protocol for NiMH handsets: Place the handset in the base immediately after installing this battery and leave it for a full 16 hours before first use. NiMH cells in cordless phones are shipped partially discharged — a slow initial charge lets the cells reach rated capacity and sets the baseline the handset uses to track charge state.

Base station showing no charge or error light on a new NiMH pack

Akai base stations use a voltage threshold to detect whether a handset is ready to accept charge. A fresh replacement NiMH pack can sit in storage long enough for its resting voltage to drop below that threshold — typically under 3.0V. When the base sees that low voltage, it interprets the pack as a fault rather than a flat battery and withholds current. Removing the handset, waiting 30 seconds, and reseating it triggers a fresh detection cycle. If the base still shows an error, leave the handset seated for 20–30 minutes — most Akai charger circuits will eventually push a recovery pulse once the pack voltage climbs above 3.2V.

Talk time shorter than expected after fitting a new battery

This is normal for the first three to five cycles on a fresh NiMH pack. New cells have not yet reached full crystalline alignment, so initial capacity runs short of the rated 600mAh. Each full charge-and-discharge cycle builds usable capacity incrementally. Run three complete cycles — full 16-hour charge followed by use until the low-battery alert sounds — and talk time will stabilise at rated capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Akai handset lost its pairing with the base after I swapped the battery — how do I fix that?

Some DECT cordless phones lose their base registration when power is fully removed from the handset. Fit the new battery, place the handset in the base to charge, then re-register it using the paging or pairing button on the base station — hold it for 5–10 seconds until the handset beeps or the indicator flashes to confirm re-pairing.

The battery drains completely overnight even when the handset is sitting in the base — what's causing that?

If the handset is not fully seated in the base cradle, the charge contacts do not make a clean connection and the standby draw runs the pack flat instead of topping it up. Check that the handset clicks or drops firmly into the base so both charge pins contact the handset terminals. If seating is correct and drain continues, clean the charge contacts on both the handset and base with a dry cotton swab — oxidation on NiMH contacts is a common culprit on older Akai cradles.

The range on my Akai cordless phone dropped noticeably after fitting the new battery — is the battery causing it?

Range reduction after a battery swap usually points to NiMH voltage sag under RF transmit load, not a fault with the pack itself. When a new NiMH cell is below full capacity, the handset's transmit circuit can't sustain its rated output power, so the signal drops off. Complete three full conditioning cycles — 16-hour slow charge followed by full discharge to the low-battery alert — and the pack's voltage under load will stabilise, restoring normal transmit power and range.
