If the light still doesn't activate, check the handset contacts are clean and the pack voltage reads at least 2.8V with a multimeter before assuming a fault.

Range drops noticeably in rooms that were fine before the swap

DECT transmitters in cordless handsets draw a short burst of current every time the handset communicates with the base. If the NiMH pack is not yet conditioned, internal resistance is higher than normal, and voltage sags under that RF load — the handset reduces transmit power to compensate. This looks like reduced range, weaker audio, or intermittent dropouts, especially at the edge of the coverage area. Run three to five full charge-and-use cycles through the base, and internal resistance will fall toward spec.
