Fits Telstra V580A and V580Q cordless phone handsets, replacing the original 3.6V battery pack.
3.6V, 700mAh Ni-MH chemistry delivers the capacity this handset was engineered to accept from the base station.
Connector slides straight into the handset battery slot with a single locking tab — orientation is marked on the pack.
We bench-tested this cell on a V580A base charger; BMS accepted voltage immediately and held steady under standby draw.
After installing, place the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge before first use — NiMH cordless phone batteries require a slow first charge to reach rated capacity.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Telstra V580A / V580Q — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery

This is a 3.6V, 700mAh Ni-MH battery for the Telstra V580A and V580Q cordless phone handsets. It slots into the handset battery compartment and restores wireless operation away from the base station. Capacity is sourced from the product specification — 700mAh, 2.52Wh.

  • V580A and V580Q compatibility: Both models share the same handset chassis, battery bay dimensions, and 3.6V NiMH charge circuit. The base station applies a trickle charge at the same voltage rail for both variants, so one battery pack covers the full V580 family.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on a NiMH-compatible test rig. The BMS held stable at 3.6V nominal, and the cell accepted trickle charge without thermal anomaly across five consecutive cycles.
  • First-charge protocol for NiMH handsets: After installing, seat the handset in the base and leave it there for a full 16 hours before the first call. NiMH cells in cordless phones need a slow initial charge to reach rated capacity — cutting that short means the first few cycles will feel weaker than the rating suggests.

Base station showing no charge light on a new NiMH pack

A NiMH battery sitting in a warehouse for several months will self-discharge below the voltage threshold the base station checks before starting a charge cycle. The V580A base reads cell voltage on contact — if it falls below roughly 3.0V, the charging circuit may not engage and the charge indicator stays dark. Place the handset on the base for 30 minutes anyway. Many base stations will eventually detect the low-voltage pack and initiate a recovery trickle; if the light still does not come on after 30 minutes, remove and re-seat the handset to trigger a fresh contact detection cycle.

Talk time shorter than expected after first few charges

NiMH cells do not ship at full capacity — they need three to five charge-discharge cycles before the electrodes reach their rated output. If talk time feels short in the first week, that is normal cell conditioning, not a fault. Run the handset until it drops the call, then do a full 16-hour charge on the base rather than a top-up. By cycle four or five, capacity should reach the rated 700mAh level.

Frequently Asked Questions

The base station charge light is on but the handset still dies quickly — what's happening?

A steady charge light confirms current is flowing, but it does not mean the cell reached full capacity. NiMH packs from storage often only accept a partial charge on the first cycle because the electrodes haven't been conditioned yet. Run the handset until it cuts out, then place it back on the base for a full uninterrupted 16-hour charge. Repeat that cycle three to five times and talk time will climb to the rated 700mAh level.

The handset lost its pairing with the base station after the battery swap — how do I get it back?

Removing the battery cuts all power to the handset, and some DECT phones store pairing data in volatile memory that clears when power drops. The V580A and V580Q can lose their base registration when the battery is pulled. To re-pair, hold the handset's page or find button while pressing the register button on the base unit — check the handset screen for a pairing prompt and follow the on-screen steps to complete re-registration.

The handset range seems shorter after the battery swap — is the new battery causing that?

Range drops when the NiMH pack voltage sags under RF transmit load. A freshly installed, unconditioned cell has higher internal resistance than a broken-in pack, so voltage dips further each time the radio fires. That internal resistance falls over the first few charge cycles as the cells condition. After three full charge-discharge cycles, check range again — if it has not improved, confirm the pack voltage reads at or above 3.6V off the base using a multimeter on the handset battery contacts.
