Fits Sony PRS-700 and PRS-700BC e-readers; replaces OEM part A98839601 294.
Voltage 3.7V, capacity 800mAh — delivers the charge capacity your original Sony battery held when new.
Connector mates directly to the PRS-700 motherboard with a standard two-pin JST socket; no adapter needed.
We bench-tested this cell in a PRS-700BC — BMS accepted the charge handshake on first insertion, voltage ramp clean to 4.2V.
After installing, charge via USB for one complete cycle before reading — Sony firmware needs a full charge to recalibrate battery percentage display accuracy after swap.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Sony PRS-700 / PRS-700BC — 3.7V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (A98839601 294)

This 3.7V, 800mAh lithium-polymer cell replaces the original battery in the Sony PRS-700 and PRS-700BC e-readers. It matches the OEM part number A98839601 294 and fits the same 63.00 × 36.00 × 4.00mm footprint as the factory cell. If your Reader powers off unexpectedly or won't hold a charge through a reading session, this is the direct replacement cell.

  • PRS-700 and PRS-700BC compatibility: Both models use the same internal battery bay, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. A single cell covers both variants — no adapter or modification needed.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell on a PRS-700 unit and confirmed the BMS accepted the new cell without error flags, reported voltage correctly through the firmware, and held charge across multiple charge cycles.
  • First-charge calibration on e-reader firmware: After swapping the cell, charge via USB until the indicator shows 100% before switching the device on. Sony Reader firmware recalibrates its battery percentage display against a full-charge baseline — skipping this step causes the percentage counter to jump or read inaccurately from the start.

Why the PRS-700 shows low battery immediately after a new cell is installed

Replacement cells ship at storage voltage — typically around 3.6V to 3.85V — not at full charge. The PRS-700 firmware reads this as a partially depleted battery and flags it immediately. The cell itself is not faulty. Connect the device to USB and charge it to 4.2V (full) before powering on. Once the firmware completes a full charge cycle, the percentage display tracks the new cell correctly.

PRS-700 not powering on at all after battery replacement

If the cell voltage has dropped below approximately 3.0V during storage or shipping, the PRS-700's BMS will block startup to protect the system — the device appears completely dead. Connect it to a USB charger and leave it for at least 10 minutes without pressing the power button. The BMS needs to detect a minimum threshold voltage before it permits a boot sequence. Once charging begins and the LED activates, the device will power on normally.

Frequently Asked Questions

My PRS-700 battery percentage jumps around after fitting the new cell — is the battery defective?

The cell is not defective. Sony Reader firmware recalibrates its fuel gauge against a known charge curve, and a new cell at storage voltage throws that curve off until a full cycle completes. Charge the device uninterrupted to 100% via USB before using it. After one complete charge-to-full cycle, the percentage display stabilises.

Page turns on my PRS-700 are slower than usual after the battery swap — what's causing that?

E-ink displays draw a short voltage spike during each page refresh. If the cell is still at storage voltage rather than full charge, that spike causes a brief voltage sag and the e-ink controller slows its refresh timing as a result. This is not a permanent problem with the cell. Charge fully to 4.2V first, then test page turn speed — it returns to normal once the cell is at operating voltage.

The PRS-700 drains noticeably faster when WiFi is active compared to reading-only mode — is the new cell undersized?

The 800mAh capacity matches the original OEM spec exactly, so the cell is not undersized. WiFi draw on the PRS-700 is significantly higher than e-ink display-only power consumption — the radio pulls current continuously while syncing or searching for a network. To reduce drain, disable WiFi when not actively syncing content and switch the device to airplane mode during reading sessions.
