Why e-readers show wildly incorrect battery percentage after a cell swap

E-ink devices track battery state through a firmware fuel gauge that builds its reference model over time. When you swap the cell, the stored model no longer matches the new cell's actual charge curve. The percentage display will jump around — sometimes showing 100%, sometimes dropping to 20% within minutes — until the firmware recalibrates. One full charge-to-discharge-to-full cycle usually resets the gauge to an accurate reading.

E-reader not powering on at all after fitting the new battery

Li-Polymer cells ship in storage mode, typically around 3.7V per cell — enough to protect the chemistry in transit but below the minimum boot voltage most e-reader boards require. The device will not turn on until the cell reaches its operational threshold. Connect the USB cable to a wall adapter, not a PC port, and leave it for at least 10 minutes before pressing the power button. The charge indicator light or on-screen animation should appear before the device boots.

My e-reader powers on but drops from full battery to low battery warning within an hour of installing this cell — is it faulty?

This is a storage voltage issue, not a faulty cell. The battery ships at a reduced state of charge, and the firmware fuel gauge is not yet calibrated to the new cell. Charge it fully via a wall adapter before using it. After one complete charge cycle, the percentage display will stabilise.

Page turns are noticeably slower after fitting the replacement battery — what's causing it?

E-ink displays draw a short burst of higher current each time the screen refreshes. When cell voltage is low or the fuel gauge is still recalibrating, the board throttles non-critical operations to protect the power rail — and screen refresh is one of them. Charge the battery fully and run one complete cycle. If the response is still sluggish after that, check that the battery connector is seated flush with no gap at the contact points.

WiFi is draining this battery much faster than reading-only use — is something wrong with the cell?

Nothing is wrong. WiFi radio draw is significantly higher than the near-zero current an e-ink display consumes between page turns. An e-reader in WiFi sync mode can draw several times more current than one being read offline. Disable WiFi when not syncing new content and let it connect on demand rather than staying on continuously — this is the single most effective way to extend charge between sessions.
