Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Eterna EB1 / EML3MISO Series — 3.6V Ni-Cd Replacement Battery (3SCH1-5L4B)
This is a 3.6V, 1600mAh Ni-Cd rechargeable cell that replaces the original battery in Eterna EB1, EML3MISO, EML3NMISO, and EMLED3M emergency lighting units. These fittings rely on this cell to power maintained or non-maintained lamps during a mains failure. Capacity matches the original at 1600mAh (5.76Wh) — no modification to the fitting needed.
- EB1 and EML series compatibility: These fittings share the same cell format, voltage rail, and charge controller logic. The 3SCH1-5L4B is the common OEM cell across this range, so the same replacement covers all listed models without wiring or bracket changes.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through a full charge cycle and a simulated mains-failure load test. The BMS accepted charge without flagging a fault, held steady under lamp load, and recovered cleanly after deep discharge — consistent with what Eterna's charge controller expects from a fresh cell.
- First-cycle conditioning on Ni-Cd cells: Hold the test button for the full rated duration within 24 hours of installation. This forces one complete discharge-under-load cycle and allows the charge controller to register the new cell before your next scheduled compliance test. Skipping this step can cause a false duration failure on first inspection.
Charge indicator staying red after new battery installation
Eterna fittings use a float-charge controller that checks incoming cell voltage before switching to the green "charged" state. A new Ni-Cd cell fresh from storage often sits below the float acceptance window — typically under 3.4V — so the controller reads it as a fault rather than a charging cell. Leave the fitting connected to mains for 24 hours. If the indicator stays red beyond that, measure cell voltage at the terminals: it should read above 3.5V once the controller has pushed enough current in. Anything below 3.2V after 24 hours on charge points to a poor connection rather than a faulty cell.
Emergency light dims and cuts short during a duration test
A new Ni-Cd cell does not always deliver full rated capacity on its first discharge. The cell requires at least one full charge-discharge cycle before the active material in the plates reaches its stated 1600mAh capacity. If the lamp dims earlier than expected during a three-hour test, recharge the fitting fully, then run the test again. A second full cycle almost always brings the cell to rated capacity and resolves the short-duration failure.

Frequently Asked Questions
The fitting still shows a fault LED after I've confirmed the new battery is seated correctly — what's causing that?
Some Eterna fittings latch a fault LED in firmware and do not clear it automatically when a new cell is installed. The cell voltage on a freshly installed Ni-Cd is often low enough that the controller never exits fault state on its own. Disconnect the fitting from mains for 30 seconds, then reconnect — this resets the charge controller and forces a fresh voltage check. If the LED clears within a few minutes of reconnection, the cell is being accepted and charging normally.
The battery has swollen inside the fitting — is this a cell fault or a fitting fault?
Swelling on a Ni-Cd cell almost always points to years of continuous trickle charge at elevated temperature rather than a defective cell. Emergency lighting fittings apply a low-level charge continuously, and if the fitting runs hot — typically above 40°C in a ceiling recess or above a heat source — the cell absorbs excess charge and vents gas, causing the casing to expand. Replace the swollen cell, then check the ambient temperature at the fitting. If the location runs hot, consider whether the fitting can be repositioned or ventilated before installing the new 3SCH1-5L4B.
The emergency light activated during a power cut but the lamp was noticeably dim — the battery was replaced six months ago and tested fine at installation.
Ni-Cd cells in shallow-cycling applications — where the fitting rarely runs on battery long enough to fully discharge — develop voltage depression over months. The active material in the plates partially deactivates, and the cell delivers lower voltage under load than its resting voltage suggests. Run a full manual test cycle by holding the test button until the lamp cuts out completely, then recharge for a full 24 hours. One deep discharge-recharge cycle usually restores capacity; if the lamp is still dim on the next test, measure cell voltage under load — below 3.0V confirms the cell needs replacement.
