Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Lithonia LV S W R 120/277 ELN UM — 7.2V Ni-CD Replacement Battery (ELB 0701N)
This is a 7.2V 2000mAh Ni-CD battery for the Lithonia LV S W R 120/277 ELN UM emergency lighting unit. It replaces OEM part numbers ELB 0701N, 60619-1, 61117-1, and 4PH22. When the original cell depletes or fails, this battery restores the unit's ability to power emergency illumination during a mains failure.
- LV S W R 120/277 ELN UM compatibility: These Lithonia units use a fixed 7.2V Ni-CD pack with a specific cell arrangement that matches the onboard charge controller's float voltage and current profile. Swapping chemistry or voltage breaks that match and prevents proper charge termination.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through a full charge cycle and a load test on the LV S W R platform. The BMS accepted the cell, float charge engaged correctly, and the charge indicator advanced to green within the expected window.
- First test cycle after installation: Within 24 hours of fitting, hold the test button for the full rated duration. This confirms the new cell accepts load under real conditions and allows the charge controller to register actual cell capacity before your next scheduled compliance inspection.
Charge indicator staying red after new battery installation
A freshly installed Ni-CD cell that has sat in storage will often present a resting voltage below the charge controller's float acceptance window. The controller reads this as a fault condition and holds the red indicator rather than entering normal charge mode. The fix is to leave the unit on mains power undisturbed for a full 24-hour charge cycle. After that period, the cell voltage should reach at least 8.4V at rest, and the indicator should advance to green.
Emergency light dims and cuts short during a duration test
This happens when the cell has not completed a full initial charge before the test is run. Ni-CD cells need one complete charge cycle to reach rated capacity — a partially charged cell will hit the low-voltage cutoff early and drop output. If the unit dimmed during test, put it back on mains for 24 hours before retesting. A cell that still dims after a full charge cycle has likely developed memory effect or internal resistance damage and needs replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Lithonia LV S W R emergency light still shows the fault LED after I've installed the new ELB 0701N battery — what's wrong?
Some Lithonia fittings latch the fault LED in hardware and don't auto-clear when a new cell is detected. After confirming the battery is seated and the connector is fully engaged, cut mains power to the fitting for 30 seconds, then restore it. This forces the charge controller to re-initialise and re-read the cell. If the fault LED clears and the unit enters charge mode, the installation is good.
The emergency light passed the monthly flick test fine, but it failed the annual 90-minute duration test after I replaced the battery — why?
A new Ni-CD cell needs at least one full charge cycle before it can deliver rated capacity under sustained load. If the annual test ran before that first cycle completed, the cell hit low-voltage cutoff early and the unit shut down ahead of the required duration. Put the fitting back on mains for a full 24 hours, then rerun the duration test. One complete charge-discharge-recharge cycle is enough to condition the cell to its rated 2000mAh output.
The replacement battery has started to bulge inside the Lithonia fitting after about a year — is this a fitting problem or a cell problem?
Swelling in a Ni-CD pack is a sign of overcharge damage, typically caused by a charge controller that is no longer terminating the trickle charge correctly. Continuous trickle current at elevated ambient temperature — common inside enclosed emergency light housings — builds up gas pressure inside the cell casing over time. Replace the swollen cell immediately and check the fitting's charge termination circuit. If the replacement cell swells again within 12 months, the charge controller in the fitting has failed and the entire unit needs to be replaced.
