Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

TomTom Urban Rider Series — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (MALAGA)

This is a 3.7V, 2200mAh Li-ion cell built to replace the original battery in the TomTom Urban Rider, Urban Rider Pro, and Rider 2nd Edition motorcycle GPS navigators. It uses OEM part references MALAGA, 6027A0050901, and 6027A0131301. When the original cell no longer holds a charge, this replacement restores the device to full working condition.

  • Urban Rider and Rider 2nd Edition compatibility: These models share the same 3.7V battery bay, connector type, and BMS handshake protocol. One cell fits all listed variants without modification or adapter.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on a TomTom Urban Rider unit. The BMS accepted the cell cleanly, reported correct voltage, and did not trigger a protection cutoff during normal navigation load.
  • First satellite fix after fitting: After a full power interruption, the GPS module performs a cold start. Take the device outdoors and power it on before mounting — allow 5 to 10 minutes for first satellite acquisition. Subsequent warm starts complete in under a minute once almanac data is cached.

GPS accuracy reduced at low battery on the Urban Rider

The Urban Rider's receiver management firmware reduces GPS sensitivity as the cell voltage drops toward the low-charge threshold. This is a deliberate power-saving behaviour, not a hardware fault. The result is a wider position scatter and occasional route drift at low charge. Keep the cell above 3.5V during active navigation to maintain full receiver sensitivity.

Device shuts off without warning before the battery indicator hits empty

After fitting a new cell, the on-screen fuel gauge is calibrated to the old cell's discharge curve. The indicator can read 20–30% remaining while the actual cell voltage has already dropped to the cutoff threshold. The BMS cuts power immediately at that point with no low-battery warning displayed. Run two full charge-discharge cycles and the gauge recalibrates to the new cell — shutdowns without warning should stop after that.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Urban Rider lost all my saved routes after I swapped the battery — is that normal?

Yes. The Urban Rider stores active route data and some user-saved POIs in battery-backed volatile memory. When the cell is fully removed, that memory loses power and the data is cleared. Favourite locations stored to internal flash are retained, but any route that was loaded but not explicitly saved before the swap will be gone. Re-enter those routes after fitting the new battery.

After fitting this battery, the Urban Rider is taking over five minutes to find a GPS signal — something wrong?

Nothing is wrong. Full power removal wipes the GPS receiver's cached almanac and ephemeris data, forcing a cold start. A cold start requires the receiver to download fresh satellite positioning data from scratch, which takes 5 to 10 minutes outdoors with a clear sky view. Subsequent power cycles use cached data and lock in under a minute. Leave the device stationary outdoors on first use and let it complete the full cold-start acquisition.

The Urban Rider is draining this battery much faster when I'm actively navigating than when it's sitting idle — why?

Active navigation runs the GPS receiver and the display simultaneously at sustained load. The receiver polls satellite data continuously, and the screen runs at higher brightness in direct sunlight — both draw current the whole time. In standby, the receiver duty-cycles and the display is off. Reduce screen brightness to the lowest usable level in daylight to cut the load, and check that the backlight timeout is not set to "always on" in the display settings.
