Arlo Essential Smart Wired Video Doorbell AVD2001 — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (A-12)

This is a 3.7V, 5200mAh Li-ion battery for the Arlo Essential Smart Wired Video Doorbell (AVD2001). It replaces OEM part numbers A-12 and 308-50025-03. The battery powers the doorbell's continuous video recording, motion detection, and night vision functions.

  • AVD2001 fitment: The Essential Smart Wired Video Doorbell uses this cell as a buffer between the wired transformer input and the processor load. Voltage spikes during motion-triggered recording are absorbed by the battery rather than passed directly from the wire feed, so connector alignment and BMS handshake voltage must match the original cell exactly.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through motion-trigger cycles on a wired doorbell unit. The BMS handled the combined IR LED and processor current draw without tripping, and the cell held voltage above 3.5V through sustained multi-event recording sequences.
  • App registration after swap: Power cycle the doorbell once through the Arlo app immediately after fitting the new cell. The firmware must register the fresh battery before motion events log correctly to cloud storage — skipping this step can cause missed recordings even when the hardware is fully functional.

Why the AVD2001 goes offline in the Arlo app after a battery swap

When the AVD2001 loses power during a battery swap, the active session token between the doorbell and Arlo's cloud server expires. The device comes back online at the hardware level, but the app loses its registration link and shows the doorbell as offline or unreachable. This is a firmware-side behaviour, not a fault with the replacement cell. To fix it, remove the doorbell from your device list in the Arlo app and re-add it — the app will re-establish the token and the device will show as online within 60 seconds.

App reporting 0% or incorrect charge percentage after install

The AVD2001 uses a voltage-threshold indicator rather than a fuel gauge IC, so the percentage shown in the app is calculated from cell voltage at rest. A new cell installed at a slightly different resting voltage than the depleted original will confuse the threshold table and display 0% or a wildly incorrect figure. This is not a faulty battery. Run one full charge cycle through the wired input and let the cell rest for two hours — the app will re-anchor its threshold reference and display an accurate percentage once the resting voltage stabilises above 4.0V.

My Arlo Essential doorbell stops recording partway through a motion clip — what's cutting it off?

A mid-clip recording dropout on the AVD2001 is usually a BMS trip caused by the current spike when the doorbell attempts a WiFi reconnect during a weak-signal event. The processor, IR LEDs, and WiFi radio all draw simultaneously, and on a marginal signal the reconnect attempt adds enough current to push the BMS over its cutoff threshold. Move your router closer or add a WiFi extender to reduce reconnect attempts. If the issue persists on a strong signal, check that the wired transformer is supplying the correct 16–24V AC input, as an undervoltage wire feed forces the battery to compensate and accelerates BMS trips.

Night vision cuts out after the camera has been running for a few hours overnight — is the battery draining too fast?

Sustained IR LED draw overnight is the most common cause of this on wired security doorbells. Even with a wired input, the AVD2001 relies on the battery to buffer IR LED current during continuous night recording, and a degraded or poorly matched cell will sag below the IR LED activation threshold after extended use. This replacement cell is rated at 5200mAh and handled sustained IR draw on the bench without voltage sag below 3.5V. If night vision still cuts out after fitting this cell, confirm the wired transformer output is stable — measure AC voltage at the doorbell terminals and confirm it reads at least 16V under load.

The Arlo app shows the doorbell as charging but the battery percentage hasn't moved in 24 hours — what's wrong?

This usually means the BMS on the new cell has not received enough input voltage from the wired transformer to exit its re-entry threshold and begin accepting charge current. The AVD2001's transformer input must deliver clean, stable AC before the BMS opens the charge path. Check for loose wiring at the doorbell terminals — even a partial connection can drop voltage below the BMS re-entry point of approximately 2.5V per cell. Tighten both terminal screws, wait five minutes, and confirm the percentage begins incrementing in the app.
