Cowon D2 / D2 Plus Series — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery

This is a 3.7V, 1800mAh Li-ion cell for the Cowon D2 and D2 Plus portable media players. It fits the D2 2GB, D2 4GB, D2 8GB, and D2 Plus 16GB. Swap it when the original cell no longer holds charge or the player shuts off unexpectedly during playback.

• D2 and D2 Plus compatibility: All four D2 variants — 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, and the D2 Plus 16GB — share the same 3.7V single-cell battery bay, connector pinout, and BMS communication protocol. One cell fits all four.
• Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell on a D2 unit and confirmed the BMS accepted the charge cycle without fault. The protection circuit tripped correctly at low-voltage cutoff and resumed charging when current was reapplied from rest.
• Post-swap charge cycle on the D2: After installing a new cell, connect the D2 to its charger before powering on. Media players that have sat unused can enter a deep-discharge protection state. A slow trickle charge lasting at least 30 minutes lets the BMS exit that state before the device accepts a full charge current.

Battery percentage jumping after a cell swap on the D2

The D2 estimates charge level by tracking voltage thresholds rather than using a dedicated fuel gauge IC. After fitting a new cell, the firmware's stored voltage curve no longer matches the new cell's actual discharge profile. The percentage readout will jump or skip — especially between 80% and 30% — until the player recalibrates. Run two full charge and discharge cycles to let the firmware map the new cell's curve accurately.

Playback cutting out before the battery indicator shows empty

The D2's audio amplifier draws a short burst of higher current when outputting loud or bass-heavy audio. In an aged or partially depleted cell, this burst causes a voltage sag that dips below the BMS cutoff threshold — shutting the player off even though the indicator still reads 10–20%. A fresh 1800mAh cell restores the headroom the amplifier needs. If the new cell still cuts out early, let it cool for 10 minutes and confirm the charger is delivering the correct 4.2V at end of charge.
