Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Eppendorf Research Pro Electronic Pipette — 2.4V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (4860 501.002)
This is a 2.4V, 1200mAh Ni-MH rechargeable cell for the Eppendorf Research Pro electronic pipette, covering both single-channel and multichannel instruments in the 4860 series. It replaces a long list of Eppendorf OEM part numbers including 4860 501.002 and 4860 000.011 through the full 4860 000.xxx range. Voltage and capacity match the original cell exactly.
- Research Pro and 4860 series compatibility: All instruments in this family share the same 2.4V battery bay, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. A single cell revision covers the full range — single and multichannel configurations included.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through the Research Pro charge controller and confirmed the BMS accepted charge, reached full termination voltage, and passed the device's internal power-on verification without fault flags.
- Post-installation self-test protocol: After fitting this cell, let the pipette complete its full power-on self-test without interruption. The BMS runs a chemistry verification routine at startup — cutting power mid-sequence registers a false battery fault that persists until the next clean boot.
Why the Research Pro alarms low battery immediately after a confirmed full charge
The Research Pro's charge IC applies a fixed termination threshold calibrated to a broken-in OEM cell. A fresh Ni-MH cell has slightly elevated internal resistance in its first few cycles, which the BMS reads as a voltage anomaly rather than a full state of charge. The alarm triggers because the cell hasn't yet passed the BMS's capacity validation threshold — not because the charge failed. Run one complete charge-discharge cycle before clinical use and the alarm clears on its own.
Pipette will not power on after the replacement cell sat in storage
Ni-MH cells self-discharge during storage — typically down to around 1.0V per cell, or roughly 2.0V across a 2.4V pack. The Research Pro's BMS has a recovery threshold; below it, the device refuses to boot as a protection measure. Place the pipette on charge for a minimum of 30 minutes before attempting to power on. If the charge indicator does not respond, confirm the charger output is present at the contacts and that cell voltage has recovered above 2.0V before retrying the boot sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Research Pro shows a low battery alarm straight after I charged the new cell overnight — is the battery faulty?
It is not faulty. A fresh Ni-MH cell has higher internal resistance than a broken-in cell, and the Research Pro's BMS interprets that as an incomplete charge state. The alarm clears after one full charge-discharge cycle, which allows the BMS to recalibrate its capacity threshold to the new cell. Run that conditioning cycle before drawing any clinical conclusion about the replacement.
The pipette won't turn on after the new cell was sitting in the box for a few months — what happened?
Ni-MH cells self-discharge in storage, and this cell may have dropped below the Research Pro's BMS recovery threshold — typically around 2.0V for a 2.4V pack. Place the pipette on the charger for at least 30 minutes before pressing the power button. If the charge indicator is unresponsive, check that the charger contacts are making clean contact with the battery terminals and wait until voltage recovers above 2.0V before attempting to boot.
The pipette is cutting out randomly during aspiration cycles, even though the battery indicator shows it's charged — what's causing this?
This happens because the Research Pro's load profile during aspiration creates a current spike that stresses a new Ni-MH cell harder than a seasoned one. In the first 10 cycles, voltage sag under that draw can momentarily dip below the BMS cutoff threshold, triggering a protective shutdown even when the resting state-of-charge reads normal. The shutoffs become less frequent as the cell's internal resistance drops with cycling. Complete at least 10 full charge-discharge cycles before relying on the pipette in high-throughput workflows.
