Sealed lead-acid cells can drop below 12V at rest after extended shelf time, and the Lifepak 9 boot controller will not advance past its initial voltage check at that level. Connect the device to its AC charger and allow a full charge cycle to complete before attempting to power on from battery alone. The BMS on the Lifepak 9 uses a learned voltage profile to validate battery state, and a brand-new sealed lead-acid cell hasn't completed that learning cycle yet. On the first charge, the charge IC applies a conservative acceptance threshold, so the cell may read as marginal even at full charge. Run one complete charge-discharge-recharge cycle before using the device clinically. After that cycle, the BMS recalibrates its threshold and the low-battery alarm clears.

The Lifepak 9 shuts off unexpectedly during use — could the new battery be causing this?

Sealed lead-acid cells under a defibrillator load profile experience higher voltage sag in the first several cycles than they will once conditioned. The Lifepak 9 monitors bus voltage continuously during operation, and if the cell sags below the cutoff threshold under load, the device shuts down as a protection measure. This is most pronounced in the first 5–10 cycles on a new cell. Condition the battery through several full charge-discharge cycles on the device before returning it to clinical rotation.

The charge indicator on the Lifepak 9 won't reach 100% on the first charge with the new battery — is the battery faulty?

This is a normal behaviour on the first charge of a new sealed lead-acid cell, not a fault. The Lifepak 9 charge circuit applies a reduced acceptance current to an unconditioned cell and terminates early if the voltage rise rate doesn't match its expected curve for a fully formed cell. Allow the battery to complete a full discharge on the device, then recharge from flat. On the second charge cycle the voltage response curve normalises and the indicator will advance to full charge.
