Sudden shutdown at 20–30% on the SPH-A420 after a cell swap

This is a fuel gauge IC mismatch, not a faulty battery. The phone's coulomb counter was calibrated against the discharge curve of the original, degraded cell — so its voltage-to-percentage mapping is wrong for a fresh cell. Under modem or screen load, the new cell's voltage briefly dips at a point the gauge misreads as empty, triggering an emergency shutdown. One full discharge cycle from 100% to automatic cutoff, then a full charge, forces the IC to relearn the new cell's curve and eliminates the false shutoff.

Phone feels warm near the battery during the first few charges

A new Li-ion cell has higher internal impedance than a broken-in cell. During the first one to three charge cycles, the charge IC pushes current into that higher-impedance cell, which generates more heat than usual at the battery contact area. This is normal and resolves as the cell completes its initial formation cycles. If warmth persists beyond the third full charge or the phone becomes hot to the touch, stop charging and check that the replacement part number matches AB463446BA exactly.

My SPH-A420 shows 25% battery and then shuts off without warning — is the new battery bad?

The battery itself is not the problem here. The phone's fuel gauge IC was calibrated to the old cell's discharge curve, so it misreads the voltage cliff on the new cell and calls it empty under load. Run one full discharge from 100% down to automatic shutdown, then charge to 100% without interruption. After that single cycle the gauge recalibrates to the new cell and the premature shutdowns stop.

The battery percentage on my phone is jumping around erratically after I installed the replacement — it went from 60% to 80% without charging.

Erratic percentage readings are a coulomb counter recalibration symptom. The fuel gauge IC accumulated drift tracking the old degraded cell, and it has not yet mapped the new cell's discharge curve. Avoid topping up or partial charges for the first two cycles — let the phone discharge fully each time so the IC can build an accurate state-of-charge model. After two complete discharge-charge cycles the readings stabilise.

My phone will not power on at all after the replacement battery sat unused in storage for a few months — I just installed it and nothing happens.

A Li-ion cell stored for several months can self-discharge below 2.5V per cell, which triggers BMS lockout to prevent damage. The BMS will not allow a normal charge cycle to start from this state. Connect the phone to a wall charger — not a USB port — and leave it for 20 to 30 minutes without attempting to power it on. The charger's trickle current will bring the cell above the BMS re-entry threshold, after which the phone will show a low-battery screen and boot normally.
