The phone reads that as a hard shutoff condition, not a low-battery warning. One full discharge-charge cycle at standard current resets the coulomb counter and maps the new cell's curve correctly. After that cycle, the percentage readout and actual cutoff voltage align.

USB fast charge not activating after fitting the replacement cell

The Nubia N1's charge IC performs a handshake check before enabling high-current input — if the BMS on a new cell hasn't completed its first initialisation cycle, the charge IC defaults to trickle or standard 5V charging rather than fast charge mode. This isn't a fault with the charger or the cable. Connect the original ZTE charger and allow one full standard-rate charge cycle to complete. After that cycle, fast charge handshake negotiations resume normally on subsequent charges.

Probably not dead, but the BMS has tripped into lockout. Li-Polymer cells that drop below roughly 2.5V per cell trigger a protection cutoff that prevents the phone from powering on normally. Connect the original ZTE charger and leave it plugged in for 20–30 minutes without pressing the power button — the charge IC will trickle current into the cell until voltage clears the BMS recovery threshold, at which point the phone will boot. If the charging LED doesn't light within five minutes, try a different USB cable before assuming cell failure.

The battery percentage on my Nubia N1 jumps around — shows 45%, then suddenly drops to 12% and back up again.

This is the fuel gauge IC recalibrating against a cell discharge curve it hasn't mapped yet. The Nubia N1 stores the previous cell's curve in its coulomb counter, and a new cell with different internal impedance causes erratic readings until the counter resets. The Nubia N1 gets noticeably warm near the battery area during the first few charges after fitting the new cell — is that normal?

Yes, and it's specific to new high-impedance Li-Polymer cells. A fresh cell has higher internal resistance than a broken-in one, so the charge IC dissipates slightly more energy as heat during the constant-current phase. This typically settles after two to three full charge cycles as the cell's internal resistance drops toward its rated value. If the phone feels hot to the touch rather than warm, or if the back panel bulges at any point, stop charging immediately and check that the battery connector is fully seated flat against the board.
