Why the N551RC shuts down at 20–30% battery remaining

The fuel gauge IC on this platform was calibrated against the original cell's discharge curve. Under full CPU and display load, the laptop hits a voltage point the IC interprets as critical cutoff — even though the cell has charge left. Running two to three full discharge-and-charge cycles recalibrates the IC against the new cell and brings the gauge back into accurate range.

BIOS reporting battery health as "poor" immediately after replacement

The BIOS reads battery health data from EEPROM registers on the battery's BMS board. A fresh replacement cell carries factory-default EEPROM values that don't yet reflect real-world cycle data, and some BIOS firmware versions flag this as a health warning rather than a new-cell state. This is not a fault with the cell. Complete the learn cycle — discharge fully to hibernate, charge uninterrupted to 100% — and the BIOS health status will update once the EEPROM data populates correctly. My N551RC shows a different Wh rating in system info than the battery label — is the cell wrong?

The Wh figure displayed in Windows or Linux power settings is pulled from the EEPROM on the battery's BMS board, not the physical label. Factory EEPROM values on replacement cells can differ slightly from the printed spec until the fuel gauge IC has run calibration cycles against the new chemistry. The label and product data are the authoritative values: 45.6Wh at 11.4V. Run two full discharge-to-hibernate and charge-to-100% cycles — the reported figure will stabilise.

The laptop won't charge past 80% after fitting the new cell — is this a faulty battery?

This is almost always a BIOS-controlled charge limit, not a cell fault. Clevo and many OEM BIOS versions include a battery conservation mode that caps charging at 80% to reduce long-term cell stress. Check the Clevo Control Center or BIOS power settings for a "Battery Care" or "Charging Mode" option and set it to full-charge mode. If no such setting exists, confirm your BIOS is on the latest firmware — some early versions had a bug that locked the charge ceiling regardless of software setting.

Windows shows the battery as "Unknown" or 0% for several minutes after boot — what's happening?

The fuel gauge IC needs a moment to establish communication with the new cell's BMS and read the EEPROM data on first boot. If "Unknown" or 0% persists beyond two or three minutes, the IC hasn't completed initialisation — this usually clears after the first full discharge cycle. If the status stays stuck at 0% with the charger disconnected and the laptop still running, boot into BIOS setup, let it sit on that screen for 60 seconds, then exit — this forces a BMS re-initialisation outside the OS power stack.
