My Compaq Mini 700 shuts off suddenly at around 20–25% battery remaining — why?

This is a voltage cliff issue specific to the Mini 700 under combined CPU and display load. The cell voltage drops sharply under that load before the fuel gauge catches up, and the BIOS triggers an emergency shutdown to protect the hardware. It is most common in the first few cycles before the fuel gauge IC has calibrated against the new cell. Run two full discharge-to-hibernate cycles uninterrupted, and the shutdowns will stop once the BIOS has an accurate voltage-to-capacity map.

The Mini 700 BIOS shows the Wh rating as wrong — it says something different from the 48.84Wh on the spec sheet.

The Wh figure the BIOS displays is pulled from EEPROM data stored on the battery's protection circuit, which reflects the rated capacity written at the factory. If the displayed value differs slightly from 48.84Wh, it is a rounding or rated-versus-actual chemistry difference — not a defect. The cell itself delivers the correct energy. Complete one full learn cycle (full discharge to hibernate, then uninterrupted charge to 100%) and the BIOS will update its reported value to align with the installed cell.

The new battery stopped charging at 80% and won't go higher — is the cell faulty?

This is almost always a BIOS-controlled charge threshold, not a cell fault. Many Mini 700 units ship with a battery charge limit enabled in BIOS to reduce long-term wear when the laptop is used mostly on AC power. Enter the BIOS setup at boot, navigate to the Power or Battery settings menu, and disable the charge limit or set it to 100%. If no such setting appears, check the HP Power Manager utility in Windows — the charge cap is often set there rather than in BIOS.
