A replacement cell sourced from a different production batch may carry EEPROM metadata that the BIOS interprets as aged. This is a data mismatch, not a fault with the cell itself. Run one full discharge-to-hibernate then charge to 100%; the BIOS rewrites its health baseline from the new cell's actual behaviour, and the warning clears.

My HP 15-F shows the new battery as 0% or "plugged in, not charging" right after install — what's wrong?

The HP battery controller sometimes locks charge authority until it completes a handshake with the new cell's EEPROM. Shut the laptop down fully, remove the AC adapter for 30 seconds, reconnect AC only — no power button — and leave it for five minutes before booting. This resets the charge circuit handshake. If charge still doesn't start, boot into BIOS, let it sit on the BIOS screen for two minutes, then restart; the controller re-polls the battery and releases charge authority at that point.

The battery percentage jumps around wildly — drops from 60% to 15% in minutes — is the cell defective?

The fuel gauge IC on the HP 15-F board stores a discharge curve calibrated to the original cell. A new cell with different internal resistance produces voltage readings the gauge misinterprets as rapid capacity loss. This is a calibration gap, not a cell fault. Run three complete cycles — discharge to automatic hibernate, then charge uninterrupted to 100% each time — and the gauge recalculates its curve against the new cell's actual chemistry, stabilising the percentage readout.

System Info shows this battery as 28Wh but HP's spec page lists a higher Wh rating — is this the wrong battery?

The Wh figure in Windows or HP Support Assistant reads from the cell's EEPROM, which stores the rated design capacity at manufacture. At 11.1V and 2600mAh, the correct rated value is 28.86Wh — that's what this cell carries. If a previous battery in the machine had a higher rated capacity, the OS may cache the old figure until the fuel gauge completes its first full calibration cycle. After one full discharge-to-100% charge, the reported Wh value updates to reflect the installed cell's actual EEPROM data.
