Fits IBM ThinkPad 310, 310D, 310E, and 310ED models; replaces OEM part numbers 11J8604, 11J8639, and ASM11J8645.
10.8V and 4000mAh capacity deliver the original power specification for full-length work sessions on this legacy platform.
Connector slot and orientation match the ThinkPad 310 battery bay; locking tab seats flush with the chassis edge.
We bench-tested this Ni-MH cell at full discharge load; the pack held voltage curve without premature cutoff at lower states.
After installation, run one full discharge to hibernate shutdown then charge uninterrupted to 100% — this resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears health warnings that appear after every cell swap.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

IBM ThinkPad 310 Series — 10.8V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (11J8604)

This is a 10.8V, 4000mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the IBM ThinkPad 310 series notebook. It fits the ThinkPad 310, 310D, 310E, and 310ED. It replaces OEM part numbers 11J8604, 11J8639, and ASM11J8645.

  • ThinkPad 310 series compatibility: The 310, 310D, 310E, and 310ED all share the same battery bay dimensions, connector pinout, and 10.8V voltage rail. One battery fits the entire line because IBM standardised the bay across this generation.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran charge and discharge cycles on this cell and monitored the BMS handshake. The pack communicates correctly with the ThinkPad 310 charge controller and holds voltage through full discharge without premature cutoff.
  • First-cycle conditioning for Ni-MH: Ni-MH chemistry in this generation of ThinkPad benefits from a full uninterrupted charge immediately after installation. Do not interrupt the first charge — partial first charges on Ni-MH can trigger the BIOS battery learn cycle to record a false low-capacity baseline.

BIOS reporting battery health as poor after installing a new cell

The ThinkPad 310 BIOS stores battery health data in EEPROM and compares it against readings from the previous cell. When a new battery is installed, the EEPROM data does not match the new cell's characteristics, so the BIOS flags it as unknown or poor. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. Run one complete discharge to hibernate-cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. That sequence resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the health warning.

Fuel gauge jumping erratically or reading 0% then 100% in the first few cycles

The fuel gauge IC in the ThinkPad 310 calibrates itself against the cell it has learned over time. A replacement cell has different internal resistance and discharge characteristics than the aged original. The gauge has no reference data yet, so readings are unreliable for the first two to three full cycles. Run two or three complete discharge-then-charge cycles and the fuel gauge IC will recalibrate against the new cell — readings will stabilise around 10.8V at full charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

My ThinkPad 310 shuts down abruptly when the gauge still shows 20–30% — is the battery faulty?

No, this is a voltage cliff issue with Ni-MH cells under combined CPU and display load. At that state of charge, the cell voltage drops sharply when current demand peaks, and the BIOS interprets it as a dead battery. The fuel gauge IC has not yet recalibrated to the new cell's discharge curve. Run two full discharge-to-hibernate then full-charge cycles and the shutdowns will stop as the gauge learns the actual cutoff point.

The ThinkPad BIOS shows the wrong Wh rating for this battery — it says something different from 43.2Wh.

The Wh figure displayed in BIOS is read from EEPROM data written by the original OEM cell, not measured live from the new pack. The replacement cell carries its own rated chemistry data, which may differ from what the old cell left behind in EEPROM. This does not affect how the battery charges or discharges. Run the BIOS battery learn cycle — one full discharge to hibernate-cutoff followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% — and the displayed value will update to reflect the actual cell.

The new battery stops charging before it reaches 100% and the charge light goes out early — what is causing this?

Ni-MH cells use a negative delta voltage (NDV) signal to tell the charger they are full. If the ThinkPad 310 charge controller detects a voltage drop or temperature rise before the cell is fully charged, it terminates early as a safety measure. This can happen on the first charge if the cell arrived partially discharged and the controller misreads the NDV signal. Let the battery drain fully to hibernate-cutoff, then restart a fresh uninterrupted charge — the controller will track the NDV signal correctly from a known low state and charge to the full 10.8V endpoint.
