Lenovo ThinkPad E590 / E490 Series — 11.1V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (01AV463)
This 11.1V 4000mAh (44.4Wh) Li-Polymer battery replaces OEM part 01AV463 in the ThinkPad E590 and E490 series. It fits the 20NB0032CD, 20N8002JCD, 20NBA00ECD, and over 25 additional E490/E590 configurations. The cell dimensions are 179.42 × 120.00 × 6.55mm — same footprint as the factory pack.
- E490 and E590 platform compatibility: Both the E490 and E590 share the same battery bay dimensions, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. One cell SKU covers both lines because Lenovo used a unified power rail at 11.1V across the E-series refresh cycle.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell on an E590 chassis and confirmed the BMS completed a full charge cycle without tripping a fault code. The protection circuit responded correctly to over-discharge cutoff and resumed charging after a brief rest period.
- Post-install discharge cycle on ThinkPad firmware: After fitting this battery, run one full discharge down to hibernate-cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the inaccurate health warning that appears on first boot after any cell swap.
Laptop shutting down at 20–30% shown after battery swap
This is a voltage cliff symptom, not a capacity fault. Under combined CPU and display load, the cell voltage drops faster than the fuel gauge IC expects based on its stored discharge curve. The BIOS interprets the sudden drop as a critical-level condition and triggers an emergency shutdown. Run two full discharge-recharge cycles without interruption — after that, the fuel gauge IC recalibrates its curve against the new cell chemistry and the shutdowns stop.
BIOS reporting battery health as poor immediately after replacement
The ThinkPad BIOS reads health data from the battery's EEPROM on every boot. A new cell ships with factory EEPROM values that do not match the charge history the BIOS expects to see, so it flags the battery as degraded. This is a data mismatch, not a cell defect. Run the battery learn cycle via Lenovo Vantage — navigate to Power → Battery Settings → Run the Battery Gauge Reset — and the health status will update to normal within one completed cycle.

My ThinkPad E590 shows the new battery at 0% and won't recognise it at all — is the cell dead out of the box?
The fuel gauge IC on a brand-new cell has no calibration data, so the BIOS sometimes reads it as 0% or "unknown" on first boot. Plug in AC power and let the battery charge uninterrupted to 100% without booting into Windows. Once the charge cycle completes, restart — the BIOS will read the EEPROM correctly and display an accurate percentage.
Lenovo Vantage shows this battery as 44Wh but my original was listed as 45Wh — did I get the wrong pack?
The Wh figure displayed in Vantage is pulled from the battery EEPROM, and rated capacity can differ slightly between OEM and replacement cells due to how the manufacturer encodes the nominal value. This cell is rated at 44.4Wh — within normal tolerance of the original pack. If the voltage reads 11.1V and the charge cycle completes normally, the cell is correct for your machine.
My E490 stops charging at 80% and never goes higher — is the replacement battery faulty?
This is almost always a BIOS-controlled charge threshold, not a cell fault. Lenovo firmware includes a Conservation Mode setting that caps charging at 80% to reduce long-term cell stress. Open Lenovo Vantage, go to Power → Battery Settings, and check whether Conservation Mode is enabled. Disable it and the battery will charge to 100% on the next cycle.
