HP Jornada 520 Series — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (F1798)

This is a 3.7V, 1800mAh Li-ion replacement battery for the HP Jornada 520, 525, 535, and 540 handheld pocket PCs. It replaces OEM part number F1798 and fits the original battery bay without modification. These early-2000s PDAs rely on this cell for all active memory, OS state, and user data — a dead or degraded cell means a device that won't hold anything.

Why the Jornada 520 loses all data when the battery dies

Unlike modern smartphones with flash-based storage for app state, the Jornada 520 runs its active memory on SRAM — a volatile memory type that needs continuous power to retain data. When the battery drops below the BMS cutoff voltage, SRAM loses power and clears immediately. There is no background save. Any contacts, calendar entries, or documents stored only on the device and not synced to a PC are gone at that point. Restoring from an ActiveSync backup to a host PC is the only recovery path.

Jornada 520 stuck on boot screen after battery replacement

A replacement Li-ion cell shipped in storage state may arrive at 3.0V or below — below the minimum threshold the Jornada's boot sequence needs to complete. The device powers on, reaches the boot screen, then stalls or resets in a loop. This is not a fault with the battery or the device. Connect the Jornada to its charger and leave it for at least 30 minutes before attempting to boot — the cell needs to reach approximately 3.6V before the system can initialise correctly.
