This is a 3.7V 850mAh Li-Polymer replacement battery for the IBM WorkPad 8602-10U and WorkPad c500 PDAs. It replaces OEM part number UP383562A. The flat-cell format matches the original cell at 62.80 × 35.22 × 4.00mm, so it fits the existing battery bay without modification.

Why the WorkPad loses all data when the battery goes flat

The WorkPad c500 and 8602-10U store the active user database — contacts, calendar entries, memos — in SRAM, not flash. SRAM needs a continuous voltage supply to retain data. When the battery discharges fully or is removed without a prior sync, that voltage drops to zero and the RAM contents are wiped. A fresh battery restores power but cannot recover data that was never written to the host. Always HotSync before the battery warning appears, not after.

WorkPad shows the charging screen but won't complete a full boot

A deeply discharged Li-Polymer cell may sit below 3.0V when it arrives or after long storage. The WorkPad boot sequence demands a minimum threshold voltage before it will pass the splash screen. If the device loops on the charging animation or resets immediately on power-up, leave it on charge for 30–60 minutes before attempting to boot. Check that the cell reaches at least 3.6V on the connector before trying again.

My WorkPad wiped everything after I swapped the battery — is there any way to recover the data?

No recovery is possible from the device itself once the SRAM loses power. The WorkPad stores contacts, calendar, and memos in volatile RAM, not flash — the moment battery voltage drops to zero during a swap, that data is gone. The only source for those records is the last HotSync backup on your host computer. Restore via HotSync Manager using the most recent backup folder for your user profile.

The WorkPad won't boot after fitting the new battery — it just resets or freezes on the logo screen.

A new or stored Li-Polymer cell can arrive below the minimum voltage the WorkPad needs to complete its boot sequence. Connect the device to a charger and leave it for at least 45 minutes before pressing the power button. If the reset loop continues, check the battery connector is fully seated — the flat-cell connector on the c500 can appear locked but still have one pin lifted. Re-seat and attempt boot once the cell reads 3.6V or above.

Wireless HotSync keeps dropping or running much slower since the battery swap — what's causing it?

The WorkPad's IR and serial sync radio draws significantly more current than standby, and a partially charged cell will sag under that load — the voltage dips enough to trigger a brownout mid-transfer. Run the device on charge for a full cycle before your first wireless sync attempt. If drops continue on a full charge, check that the HotSync cradle contacts are clean; oxidised contacts add resistance that compounds the voltage sag problem.
