Yes, if the PLC was powered off during the swap, SRAM lost its retention voltage and the program was erased. There is no on-board recovery — the memory contents are gone. Going forward, always replace the 1770-XR battery with the controller powered on and in RUN mode to prevent this.

The date and time on my 1770-XR reset to zero after replacing the battery — what happened?

The real-time clock is held by the same SRAM retention circuit as program memory. If the controller lost power or the battery was removed while the PLC was off, the RTC lost its reference and defaulted to epoch zero. The clock does not resync automatically.
