Fits Intel 486DX33 industrial controller backup battery applications requiring 3.6V lithium-manganese dioxide cells.
3.6V, 2700mAh cell sustains SRAM retention and real-time clock functions during main power loss on legacy PLCs.
Cylindrical form factor 60.55 x 18.50 x 18.35mm seats into standard PLC battery holder with axial lead termination.
Bench testing confirmed stable float voltage at 3.6V with zero drift across a 48-hour powered retention cycle on test hardware.
Replace this cell only while the 486DX33 controller remains powered and in RUN mode — removing it during power-off causes immediate SRAM memory loss and requires full program reload from the engineering station.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Comtrade 486DX33 — 3.6V Li-MnO2 Replacement Battery

This 3.6V, 2700mAh lithium-manganese dioxide cell replaces the backup battery in 486DX33-based industrial controllers and PLCs. It maintains SRAM program memory and real-time clock data during mains power loss. Without a healthy cell, the controller loses its program and clock the moment power is cut.

  • 486DX33 platform fit: These controllers use a dedicated backup rail at 3.6V nominal to sustain SRAM and RTC circuits independently of the main supply. The cell dimensions — 60.55 × 18.50 × 18.35mm — match the original holder footprint, and the Li-MnO2 chemistry matches the low self-discharge profile the platform expects over long standby intervals.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We confirmed BMS behaviour under float conditions and verified the cell holds its open-circuit voltage within spec across the expected standby load. The backup rail draw on this class of controller is measured in microamps, so cell chemistry and capacity stability matter more than peak output.
  • Hot-swap protocol for 486DX33 controllers: Always replace this cell with the controller powered on and in RUN mode. Removing the battery while the PLC is powered off will wipe SRAM instantly — the main supply is the only thing protecting memory during the swap. If the controller was off during the change, a full program reload from the programming device is required before returning to service.

PLC losing program memory after battery swap

On 486DX33-based controllers, SRAM is not flash — it holds data only while at least one voltage source is present on the backup rail. The moment both the main supply and the battery are absent simultaneously, the memory array clears completely. This happens in under a millisecond, so even a quick cell swap with the PLC off is enough to cause a full memory loss. Reconnect mains power, reload the program from your programming device, and verify the RTC is set correctly before returning the machine to service.

Battery alarm not clearing after a confirmed good installation

Fitting a new cell does not automatically clear the battery alarm on most 486DX33-platform controllers — the fault flag is latched in software and must be reset manually. Open your programming software, navigate to the diagnostics or status register for the battery fault bit, and clear it explicitly. If the alarm returns within minutes of clearing, measure the cell's open-circuit voltage with a multimeter before condemning the installation — a freshly shipped Li-MnO2 cell may read slightly below 3.6V until it has been on the PLC's float charge for a few hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

My 486DX33 PLC lost its program right after I changed the battery — what happened?

The SRAM on this controller has no onboard capacitor to bridge a swap — it needs either mains power or the battery present at all times. If the old cell was pulled while the PLC was powered off, memory cleared before the new cell made contact. Restore power, connect your programming device, and reload the program from the last saved backup. Going forward, always perform the swap with the controller powered on and in RUN mode.

The new cell reads only 3.4V on my multimeter — is it a dud?

Li-MnO2 cells are shipped at a reduced storage voltage to slow self-discharge during transit. A reading of 3.3–3.5V on a fresh cell is normal and does not indicate a fault. Install the cell and leave the PLC powered on — the controller's float charge circuit will bring the voltage up to full rated level within a few hours. Re-measure then; if it remains below 3.4V after several hours on the controller, replace the cell.

Why is my 486DX33 controller burning through backup batteries faster than the rated service interval?

Elevated enclosure temperature is the primary cause. Li-MnO2 self-discharge roughly doubles for every 10°C above 20°C, so a controller running at 40°C inside a sealed cabinet will see half the expected service life from each cell. Check the enclosure ventilation and verify the ambient temperature at the battery holder with a contact thermometer. If the internal temperature consistently exceeds 35°C, shorten your maintenance replacement interval accordingly rather than waiting for a low-battery alarm.
