Fits Garmin Forerunner 225, Forerunner 235, and Forerunner 630; replaces OEM part 361-00086-00.
3.7V, 180mAh Li-Polymer cell delivers multi-day runtime on standard GPS watch duty cycles.
Connector is a two-pin magnetic pogo contact; seat the cell flush against the housing slot.
We ran charge acceptance and fuel gauge calibration on the Garmin platform; BMS initialized correctly at first connect.
After fitting the new cell, place the watch on its charger immediately and charge to 100% — the fuel gauge IC cannot calibrate without a full charge cycle from near-zero after a swap.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Garmin Forerunner 225 / 235 / 630 / 735XT — 3.7V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (361-00086-00)

This is a 3.7V, 180mAh Li-Polymer cell that replaces the original battery in the Garmin Forerunner 225, 235, 630, and 735XT GPS running watches, along with 14 additional compatible models. The OEM part numbers covered include 361-00086-00, 361-00072-10, 361-00086-10, 361-00072-00, and 361-00086-23. If your watch no longer holds a charge after repeated charge cycles, this cell restores full functionality to the GPS, optical heart rate sensor, and fitness tracking features.

  • Forerunner series cell compatibility: The Forerunner 225, 235, 630, and 735XT share the same 29.00 x 19.42 x 3.38mm cell footprint, voltage rail, and connector pinout. The BMS on each of these watches handshakes with the same cell impedance profile, so one replacement cell covers all models in this group without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell on a Forerunner 235 and a 735XT. The BMS accepted the new cell without error codes on both units. The fuel gauge IC on each watch re-initialised correctly after a full charge cycle from near-zero.
  • Fuel gauge reset after swap: After fitting this cell, place the watch on its magnetic charger immediately and charge it to 100% before use. The fuel gauge IC on Forerunner platforms loses its reference point when the old cell is disconnected. Without a full charge cycle from near-zero, the gauge cannot recalibrate and will report inaccurate state-of-charge readings.

Why the Forerunner 735XT BMS trips during GPS + HR simultaneous acquisition

The 735XT draws current from two sensor subsystems at the same time when GPS lock and optical heart rate monitoring are both active from a cold start. On a degraded original cell, the combined inrush pulls voltage below the BMS cutoff threshold, which triggers a protective shutdown. A new cell with full charge capacity handles this inrush without dropping below the cutoff. If the watch shuts off at the start of an outdoor run, this is the most likely cause — not a firmware fault.

Magnetic charge contacts not reading after reassembly

After a battery swap, the watch back can shift by fractions of a millimetre, which is enough to misalign the charge contact pads with the magnetic charger pins. The charger will sit on the watch but report no charge state in Garmin Connect. Re-seat the watch back, apply even pressure around the perimeter, and confirm the back is fully flush before clipping the charger on. If charging still does not register, clean the contact pads with isopropyl alcohol and confirm the charger cable reads 5V at the pins before ruling out a contact issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Forerunner 225 shows 0% and won't turn on right after fitting the new battery — did I get a dead cell?

The cell is almost certainly fine. When the original battery is disconnected, the fuel gauge IC loses its charge reference entirely and defaults to zero on the next power-on. Place the watch on its magnetic charger immediately after the swap and leave it until the watch reports 100%. Once the gauge completes a full charge cycle from near-zero, it recalibrates and the display reads correctly.

Battery draining completely in a single day when GPS and continuous heart rate are both active — is this cell undersized?

The 180mAh capacity is correct for this platform, but always-on optical HR monitoring combined with active GPS lock is the highest combined draw the Forerunner 225 and 735XT can produce. If drain is that fast, check Garmin Connect settings and confirm the HR sensor is set to "During Activity Only" rather than all-day continuous. Background all-day HR polling on a new cell will collapse charge state far faster than activity-only use — switching that one setting is the fix before assuming a cell fault.

Watch won't pair with my phone over Bluetooth after the battery replacement — is the BLE module damaged?

The BLE session token is stored in volatile memory and gets wiped when power is removed during a swap. The module itself is not damaged. On the watch, go to Settings → Bluetooth and set it to discoverable. On your phone, go into Bluetooth settings, forget the Forerunner entirely, then re-pair from scratch. Do not use Garmin Connect's "sync" button — initiate the pair from the phone's Bluetooth menu to force a fresh session handshake.
