Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Topcon Cygnus KS-102 Total Station — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BT-77Q)
This 7.4V 2800mAh Li-ion pack replaces the OEM BT-77Q battery in the Topcon Cygnus KS-102 total station. It fits directly into the KS-102 battery compartment and delivers 20.72Wh of capacity for field surveying and construction layout work. Voltage and connector match the original specification.
- KS-102 platform fit: The BT-77Q form factor is specific to the Cygnus KS-102 body. The cell arrangement, connector polarity, and BMS communication lines match what the KS-102 instrument bus expects. No adapters or firmware changes are needed.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through full charge and discharge cycles on the KS-102 bench rig. The BMS held within operating voltage thresholds across motor drive initialisation, EDM module power-up, and sustained angle encoder load simultaneously.
- First-install calibration cycle: After fitting the new pack, run a full calibration cycle through the KS-102 instrument menu before taking it to site. The instrument maps battery state during calibration — skipping this step causes premature low-battery warnings on the first measurement session.
KS-102 shutting down at EDM or prism lock initialisation
The KS-102's EDM module draws a short current spike the moment it fires to acquire a prism. If the battery's BMS has a low instantaneous-current threshold — common in aged or deeply discharged cells — it trips the protection circuit at exactly this moment. The instrument powers off cleanly, with no error code, which makes the battery the last thing operators suspect. A fresh cell with a healthy BMS handles the spike without tripping. If the shutdown repeats after fitting a new pack, check that the battery contacts in the compartment are clean and making full contact before suspecting the instrument.
KS-102 shows "battery full" then drops to critical within minutes of starting a job
This happens when a new pack is installed without a calibration cycle — or when a stored pack is put into service with its BMS in a partially reset state. The KS-102 reads terminal voltage at power-on to set the indicator, but that voltage hasn't stabilised under load yet. Once the EDM and data logging start drawing current, the resting voltage figure collapses and the display catches up. Fix this by running the full on-instrument calibration sequence after every new battery install, which forces the instrument to sample voltage under representative load. After calibration, the percentage display should track accurately down to approximately 7.0V before a low-battery alert appears.

Frequently Asked Questions
The KS-102 powers on fine but cuts out the moment I start a distance measurement — is this the battery?
Yes, this is a known BMS trip caused by the EDM module's initialisation current spike. The protection circuit in a depleted or failing cell reads that spike as an overcurrent event and shuts the pack down before the measurement completes. Fit the new BT-77Q replacement, run the KS-102 calibration cycle from the instrument menu, then attempt a distance shot — the EDM should fire and hold without cutoff.
New battery arrived, KS-102 won't recognise it at all — instrument just shows a blank battery icon and won't boot past the startup screen.
The pack likely entered BMS sleep mode during shipping or storage, which drops cell voltage below the instrument's detection threshold. Plug the pack into the KS-102 charger and leave it connected for at least 30 minutes before attempting to power on — the charger's trickle stage recovers the BMS from sleep and brings cell voltage back above the 6.8V minimum the instrument needs to register the pack.
Readings were logging fine, then mid-session the KS-102 reset itself and lost the job data — battery showed 60% before it happened.
A spontaneous reset during active logging is a voltage dropout event, not a BMS trip. Under sustained combined load — angle encoder, EDM, and data logging running together — a degraded or cold cell sags below the instrument's minimum operating voltage for a fraction of a second, triggering a reset even though the resting voltage looks acceptable. Check that the battery contacts in the compartment are clean and seated fully; a partial contact increases resistance and worsens sag under load. If the reset repeats with a fresh pack and clean contacts, inspect the contact springs in the battery bay for compression fatigue.
