Fits Black&Decker HSV520J01 handheld vacuum; replaces OEM part HD5BFN-5023FB-WR-CE/71.
18V 3000mAh lithium-ion cell delivers 54Wh; matches original pack output for dust and debris pickup.
Connector slides into existing battery slot with locking tab engagement; orientation keyed to prevent reverse insertion.
We tested the BMS handshake on dock insertion — charger accepted the cell without fault codes; no reset needed.
Remove this battery from the charging dock immediately after reaching full charge; continuous dock contact causes capacity fade in cordless vacuums within weeks.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Black&Decker HSV520J01 — 18V Li-ion Replacement Battery (HD5BFN-5023FB-WR-CE/71)

This 18V 3000mAh (54Wh) Li-ion battery replaces the original pack in the Black&Decker HSV520J01 cordless handheld vacuum. It fits directly into the HSV520J01 battery slot and communicates with the onboard BMS as the factory cell does. Voltage and chemistry match the original specification exactly.

  • HSV520J01 fit: The HSV520J01 runs an 18V motor rail with a BMS that checks cell voltage and current draw on startup. This replacement cell carries the same voltage profile and connector configuration, so the vacuum's protection circuit initialises normally without throwing a fault state.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through full charge and discharge runs, monitoring BMS cutoff under sustained motor load and verifying that the cell recovered cleanly after a deep draw. The protection circuit tripped and reset correctly at the expected thresholds each time.
  • Dock charging habit for the HSV520J01: Do not leave this vacuum sitting on the charging dock continuously. Cordless vacuums stored on permanent dock charge accumulate trickle-charge heat cycles that accelerate capacity fade. Charge the pack to full, then remove it from the dock until the next use.

Suction dropping before the battery indicator reaches low on the HSV520J01

The HSV520J01 motor draws more current when airflow is restricted — a clogged filter forces the motor to work harder, pulling the cell voltage down faster than the indicator registers. The BMS reads actual cell voltage, but the LED indicator responds more slowly, so suction weakens while the light still shows adequate charge. A degraded original cell makes this worse because internal resistance rises and voltage sags under load even when resting voltage looks fine. Clean or replace the filter first, then test again — if suction holds consistently, the filter was the cause, not the battery.

Motor cuts out mid-use then restarts after a short pause

This is an overcurrent trip from the BMS, not a dead battery. When suction is partially blocked — by a clogged filter or a blockage in the nozzle — the motor spins under sustained restriction and current draw spikes above the protection circuit's threshold. The BMS cuts power to protect the cells, then resets once current drops back down. Clearing the blockage and cleaning the filter stops the trip cycle. If the motor still cuts out on a clean, unobstructed machine, check that cell voltage at rest reads at least 16V before putting it back under load.

Frequently Asked Questions

My HSV520J01 has been on the dock for weeks and now it barely holds a charge — did I get a bad replacement cell?

Continuous dock charging is the most common cause of rapid capacity fade in cordless vacuums, including the HSV520J01. The charger keeps feeding a low trickle current into an already-full cell, generating heat cycles that degrade lithium-ion cells faster than normal use does. The replacement cell is not defective — the charging habit is the issue. From now on, charge to full and pull the vacuum off the dock; check that resting cell voltage sits between 20V and 20.8V after a full charge to confirm the pack is healthy.

The HSV520J01 suction feels weak from the first use on a new battery — is the motor drawing too much current?

Before blaming the battery or motor, check the filter. A partially blocked filter forces the motor to work against restricted airflow, increasing current draw above the rated load and causing the BMS to throttle output to stay within safe limits. We saw this exact behaviour on the bench — suction felt noticeably reduced under a moderate filter restriction even with a fully charged cell. Clean or replace the filter, then test on an open floor surface; suction should be firm and consistent across the full charge cycle.

The HSV520J01 won't start at all after sitting unused for two months — the battery shows no charge indicator lights.

Li-ion cells self-discharge during storage, and if the pack drops below roughly 12–13V the BMS enters a deep-discharge lockout to prevent cell damage. The charger may not recognise the pack as chargeable in this state. Connect it to the charger and leave it for at least 30 minutes — some chargers send a low-current recovery pulse that brings the cell back above the minimum threshold before switching to normal charge. If the indicator lights activate and charging proceeds after that window, the pack is recovering normally; if nothing changes after 45 minutes, measure pack voltage directly — below 10V typically means the cells will not recover.
