If the old cell was pulled while the controller was powered off, yes — SRAM content is lost the moment backup voltage drops. The PLC faults because it boots with no valid program in memory. Reconnect the programming device, download the last saved project file to the controller, and perform a cold restart. Always keep a current backup of the program on a PC or memory card before any battery swap.

The new cell is reading around 2.8V on a multimeter — is it faulty?

No. Li-MnO2 cells ship at storage voltage, which sits below the nominal 3V rating. Once installed, the PLC's float circuit brings the cell up to full charge over several hours. Recheck voltage after 4–6 hours on a powered controller and you should see 3.0V or above. If it stays below 2.8V after that window, the cell may have been stored long-term — check the manufacture date on the label.

The battery on this controller seems to deplete much faster than the two-year spec — what causes that?

Enclosure temperature is almost always the cause. Li-MnO2 self-discharge roughly doubles for every 10°C above 25°C, so a control cabinet running at 45°C can cut expected service life in half or more. Check the ambient temperature inside the enclosure with a thermal probe — if it consistently exceeds 40°C, plan for annual replacement cycles rather than biennial, and ensure cabinet ventilation meets ABB's installation clearance spec for this hardware.
