Device not powering on after the battery sat unused in storage
Ni-MH cells self-discharge over time, and if the pack voltage drops far enough during storage, the BMS locks out to prevent cell damage. The device will show no response at all — no boot screen, no alarm. Place the battery on charge for a full uninterrupted charge cycle before attempting to power on the device. Most packs recover fully once voltage climbs back above the BMS recovery threshold, typically around 4.2–4.4V for this 4-cell pack.

The device powers on but shuts off unexpectedly during a test run — what is happening?
New Ni-MH cells carry higher internal resistance in the first several cycles, and the i-STAT's load profile during active analysis pulls harder than standby draw. That resistance causes a temporary voltage sag under load, which the BMS interprets as low cell voltage and cuts power. Run five to ten full charge-discharge cycles to condition the cells — internal resistance drops significantly by cycle five, and the shutoffs stop.
The charge indicator never reaches 100% on the first charge after fitting this battery — should I keep charging it?
The charge IC applies a conservative current limit on an unrecognised cell during the first charge to avoid overcharging an unknown pack. This causes it to terminate early and report below 100%. Let the device complete a full charge, then discharge it fully during normal use, and charge again — the second cycle almost always registers a full charge once the IC has logged the cell's actual capacity.
