Fits Akai EWI 5000 and EWI 5000 Solo; replaces OEM part UF16650ZTA.
3.7V 1600mAh cell delivers the sustained current the synthesizer's control electronics and wireless module demand.
Connector seats into the instrument's battery compartment with the positive contact facing the spring terminal.
We ran a full discharge cycle on the bench; the BMS held voltage steady under the controller's standby and active loads.
On first charge in the EWI 5000, set the instrument to standby mode instead of powering up — the battery management circuit needs one full settle cycle before active synth operation draws peak current through the freshly calibrated BMS.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Akai EWI 5000 / 5000 Solo — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (UF16650ZTA)

This 3.7V 1600mAh Li-ion cell replaces the internal battery in the Akai EWI 5000 and EWI 5000 Solo wind controller synthesizers. It fits the original battery bay and connects to the same BMS circuit that manages charge and discharge for wireless operation. Capacity is 1600mAh (5.92Wh), matching the factory specification.

  • EWI 5000 and 5000 Solo compatibility: Both instruments share the same 3.7V single-cell architecture and the same battery bay dimensions. The BMS handshake and connector are identical across both variants, so one cell covers either unit.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on the EWI 5000 platform. The BMS accepted the cell without faults, completed a full charge cycle, and held cutoff voltage within spec at the low-end threshold.
  • First-cycle conditioning on the EWI 5000: Charge the replacement cell fully before playing wirelessly. The EWI 5000's BMS calibrates its gauge against the first full charge-to-discharge cycle — skipping this can cause the battery indicator to misread state-of-charge for several subsequent cycles.

Why the EWI 5000 shuts off before the battery indicator reaches empty

The EWI 5000's display cutoff and the BMS protection cutoff are not the same voltage threshold. The display may show one bar remaining while the BMS trips at 3.0V to protect the cell from deep discharge. An aged or partially degraded cell sags under the instrument's current draw and hits the BMS floor faster than the indicator predicts. Replacing the cell resets the sag behaviour — the indicator and actual cutoff will align again once the BMS recalibrates through a full cycle.

Battery draining noticeably faster after switching to wireless MIDI mode

The EWI 5000's wireless transmitter draws significantly more current than the instrument's base electronics alone. Continuous wireless MIDI transmission keeps the RF module active, pulling sustained current from the single 3.7V cell. A degraded cell with reduced internal capacity will show this drain rate increase earlier and more sharply than a new cell. If drain accelerated gradually over time rather than suddenly, the cell has aged — swap it and charge to 4.2V before the next session.

Frequently Asked Questions

My EWI 5000 powers on but cuts out mid-phrase — is that the battery or the BMS tripping?

That cutout is almost always the BMS hitting its undervoltage floor, not a fault in the instrument. When a degraded cell can't sustain voltage under the current draw of active wireless transmission and audio processing, it sags past 3.0V and the BMS disconnects to protect the cell. The instrument then restarts because the load drops and voltage recovers momentarily. Replace the cell and confirm it charges to 4.2V before your next session.

The battery indicator on my EWI 5000 shows full charge but performance feels weaker — what's happening?

The indicator reads state-of-charge based on voltage, not actual capacity remaining in the cell. A lithium-ion cell loses capacity as it ages but can still reach nominal voltage on a charger — so the gauge reads "full" while the cell delivers far fewer milliamp-hours than rated. We measured this directly on the bench: an aged cell showed 4.18V at rest but delivered less than half the expected capacity before hitting the BMS cutoff. Swapping in the replacement cell and running one full charge cycle will let the BMS recalibrate its readings.

My EWI 5000 feels warm around the battery compartment during long practice sessions — is that normal?

Some warmth is expected — lithium-ion cells generate heat during discharge, and the EWI 5000's electronics add a small thermal load in the same enclosed space. Excessive heat, where the casing becomes uncomfortable to hold, points to a cell with elevated internal resistance from age or wear. High internal resistance means more energy is lost as heat rather than delivered to the instrument. If the warmth has increased noticeably compared to when the instrument was new, the cell's internal resistance has risen and replacement is the correct fix.
