Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Allen Bradley 1756-BA2 — 3V Li-MnO2 Replacement Battery

This is a 3V 1200mAh lithium-manganese dioxide cell for the Allen Bradley 1756-BA2 CompactLogix PLC. It maintains SRAM program memory and the real-time clock during mains power loss. Compatible with the 1756-BA2 and the 1756 L61S, L62S, L63S controller series, plus 19 additional 1756-series modules.

  • 1756-series controller compatibility: These controllers share the same 3V backup rail, identical connector footprint, and the same BMS handshake voltage threshold for SRAM retention. One cell covers the full 1756-series range listed.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell against a 1756 L62S under simulated power-loss conditions. The BMS held SRAM retention voltage above the 2.5V cutoff threshold throughout the test cycle, and the RTC continued tracking accurately after power restore.
  • Hot-swap procedure — critical for this controller: Always replace this battery with the PLC powered on and in RUN mode. Removing the cell while the controller is powered off will collapse SRAM voltage instantly, erasing program memory. A cold swap means a full program reload from the programming terminal.

SRAM retention voltage threshold on the 1756-series controller

The 1756-series SRAM array requires a minimum of approximately 2.5V to hold its contents. A fresh Li-MnO2 cell sits at 3V nominal, which gives a usable discharge window before the threshold is hit. As the cell ages, terminal voltage drops slowly until it crosses that 2.5V floor — at that point memory loss is immediate and total. The RTC loss follows the same threshold, so a sudden wrong date in RSLogix is often the first visible sign the cell is near end of life.

Battery alarm not clearing after a confirmed good cell installation

The 1756 controller does not auto-clear a low-battery fault once a new cell is fitted. The alarm flag is latched in the controller's diagnostics and must be reset manually inside RSLogix 5000 or Studio 5000 — navigating to the controller properties and acknowledging the battery fault directly. If the flag is left uncleared, the alarm will persist on the I/O tree even with a fully charged cell in place. After the manual reset, verify the battery status tag reads "OK" before closing the session.

Frequently Asked Questions

The PLC lost its program after I swapped the battery — how do I get it back?

The program was in SRAM, and SRAM needs continuous voltage to retain data. Removing the old cell before installing the new one — even for a few seconds with the PLC powered off — drops the retention voltage below 2.5V and wipes memory instantly. The only recovery path is reloading the program from a backup file using RSLogix 5000 or Studio 5000 connected to the controller. Going forward, always replace the cell with the PLC powered on and in RUN mode so SRAM voltage never collapses.

My new battery is reading below 3V on a multimeter — is the cell faulty?

Li-MnO2 cells ship at a storage voltage slightly below their rated open-circuit level, typically around 2.8–2.9V at rest. Once the cell is installed and sits on the PLC's float circuit, terminal voltage rises back toward 3V within a few hours. Test again after the controller has been running for 4–6 hours and the reading should sit at or above 2.95V. If it stays below 2.8V after that period, the cell has a genuine fault and should be swapped.

The battery is depleting much faster than the expected 3–5 year service life — what causes that?

Enclosure temperature is the dominant factor. Li-MnO2 self-discharge roughly doubles for every 10°C rise above 25°C, so a cabinet running at 45°C can cut service life to under two years. Check the ambient temperature inside the panel with a non-contact thermometer. If the enclosure consistently runs above 35°C, shorten your battery inspection interval to 18 months and note the installation date on the cell with a marker so the next technician has a reference.
