Why the Watch SE 44mm reports 0% immediately after a battery swap

The Watch SE 44mm uses a fuel gauge IC that tracks charge state by coulomb counting from a known reference point. When the cell is disconnected, that reference is lost entirely. The IC reads the new cell's open-circuit voltage, but without a full charge cycle it cannot anchor an accurate state-of-charge calculation. Place the watch on the charger straight after reassembly and let it reach 100% — the gauge resets its reference at full charge, and the percentage display stabilises from that point forward.

Watch not pairing with iPhone after battery replacement

Removing the battery clears the active BLE session between the watch and the paired iPhone. The watch returns from a cold boot without a valid session token, and the iPhone's Watch app cannot reconnect automatically. Open the Watch app on the iPhone, tap your watch under "My Watch," and run through the pairing sequence again — the watch does not need to be erased, just re-paired. Once the BLE handshake completes, all synced data and settings restore from the iPhone backup.

My Watch SE 44mm battery drains completely in a single day after the swap — is something wrong with the new cell?

A new cell on this platform often shows higher-than-expected drain during the first week because the fuel gauge IC is still calibrating and always-on display plus continuous heart rate monitoring draw heavily on a freshly fitted cell. Check whether always-on display and continuous heart rate monitoring are both active in Settings — running both together significantly increases current draw compared to periodic sampling mode. If drain persists beyond seven days with normal settings, charge the watch to 100%, let it drain fully, then charge back to 100% to give the fuel gauge IC a clean calibration cycle. After that cycle, resting current draw should settle to the expected multi-day profile.

The heart rate sensor seems to be draining this new battery noticeably faster than the old worn-out one did — why?

This is a real effect and it is temporary. A new cell has lower internal impedance than an aged one, which means the heart rate sensor's optical emitters draw their full rated current on every pulse rather than being current-limited by a degraded cell's resistance. The sensor's current profile on a fresh cell is higher than on a worn cell, and the watch's power management firmware adjusts its sampling cadence over the first several days as it learns the new cell's characteristics. No action is needed — the drain rate normalises within the first week of normal use as the BMS adapts its sampling intervals.

The magnetic charger clicks into place but the watch is not charging after I replaced the battery — what do I check?

The most common cause is a slight shift in the charge contact alignment during reassembly — even a fraction of a millimetre off-centre can break the magnetic connection to the charging coil. Remove the watch from the charger, inspect the back for any adhesive residue or debris on the contacts, and reseat the watch centrally on the puck. If the charging icon still does not appear, check that the flex connector for the battery was fully clicked down and not seated at an angle — a partially connected connector causes the BMS to block the charging path. Re-open, reseat the connector fully until it clicks, and place the watch back on the charger.
