Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Baofeng UV-82 Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BL-8)
This is a 7.4V 1800mAh Li-ion replacement for the Baofeng BL-8 battery pack. It fits the UV-82, UV-8R, UV-82X, UV-82C, and several additional UV-82 variants. Voltage and capacity match the original spec exactly.
- UV-82 series compatibility: The UV-82 family shares a common battery bay, contact layout, and BMS handshake across all variants. The BL-8 form factor covers the full lineup because Baofeng kept the same power rail across UV-82, UV-8R, UV-82X, and UV-82C — one pack works across all of them without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack on a UV-82 under simulated PTT load. The BMS handled the transmit current spike without tripping, and voltage held steady through both VHF and UHF output. No thermal cutoff events occurred across the test cycle.
- First insertion on the Baofeng drop-in charger: If the charger LED blinks or shows a fault on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The BL-8 ships at storage voltage — the charger needs a clean contact cycle to accept the BMS handshake before it begins charging.
Why the UV-82 cuts out mid-transmission on a new BL-8
The UV-82 draws a sharp current spike the moment PTT is pressed — RF output on this radio can pull close to 2A briefly on high-power mode. If the BMS reads that spike as an overcurrent event, it trips and cuts power to the radio instantly. This is more common when the pack has just come off a partial charge or has been sitting unused for weeks. A full charge cycle resets the BMS state and raises cell voltage above the overcurrent trip threshold, which prevents false trips under TX load.
Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after a full charge
The UV-82 uses a simple voltage-threshold bar display — each bar represents a voltage band, not a percentage. A new BL-8 arriving at storage voltage (typically around 3.7–3.8V per cell) can show one or two bars even when the pack is not depleted. This is not a fault. Charge the pack fully to 8.4V and the bar indicator will read correctly on the next power cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions
My UV-82 cuts out the moment I press PTT on a brand-new battery — what's happening?
The UV-82 pulls a sharp current spike when PTT is pressed, especially on high-power TX mode. If the BMS in the new pack reads that spike as an overcurrent event, it trips and kills power to the radio immediately. We saw this on the bench when testing packs that hadn't completed a full first charge. Charge the BL-8 fully to 8.4V before first use — a fully charged cell raises voltage above the BMS trip threshold and prevents false cutoffs under transmit load.
The UV-82 is transmitting fine at the start of a shift but drops to noticeably weaker output after a few hours — is the battery failing?
This is voltage sag under sustained RF output, not a dead cell. As the pack discharges, cell voltage drops, and the UV-82 scales back TX power once voltage falls below its output threshold — this is normal radio behaviour, not a battery fault. A degraded or partially charged original pack hits that threshold much earlier in the shift. A fresh BL-8 at full charge holds the voltage rail higher for longer, keeping the radio at full TX power through more of the shift.
The BL-8 has been sitting unused for three months and now the charger won't accept it — red fault LED won't clear.
Extended storage drops cell voltage below the minimum threshold most Baofeng chargers require to begin a charge cycle. The charger sees a pack below acceptance voltage and locks out rather than attempt to charge it. Remove the pack, wipe the gold contacts with a dry cloth, and reseat it firmly — a poor contact can mimic a low-voltage lockout. If the fault persists, try a USB-based Li-ion recovery charger set to 7.4V, which applies a low-current pre-charge to bring the cell voltage back above 6.0V before handing off to the dock.
