Why the Pro 4000 flags a low-battery alarm on a freshly charged replacement

This is not a fault with the battery — it is a learn-cycle behaviour. Run one complete charge-to-discharge cycle before relying on the battery indicator. Pro 4000 will not power on after the replacement cell sat in storage

Ni-MH cells self-discharge during storage. If voltage drops below approximately 2.0V, the Pro 4000's BMS will not initiate the boot sequence — the device simply shows nothing when powered on. Place the battery on charge immediately after installation, even if the pack was recently shipped. A minimum charge of 15–20 minutes brings the cell above the BMS recovery threshold of around 2.2V, at which point the device will boot normally.

The Pro 4000 shuts off mid-reading after only a few uses of the new battery — what's causing this?

Medical device load profiles apply short, sharp current draws during each measurement. In the first 10 cycles, a fresh Ni-MH cell has higher internal resistance, which causes a brief voltage sag under that load. The Pro 4000 interprets that sag as a depleted cell and cuts power. Condition the battery by running 3–5 full charge-discharge cycles before clinical use — internal resistance drops significantly and the mid-reading shutoffs stop.

The charge indicator on the Pro 4000 won't reach 100% on the first charge of the new battery — should I keep it on the charger?

The Pro 4000's charge IC applies a conservative current limit on cells it hasn't yet characterised. On the first charge, it often stops short of 100% as a protective measure. Remove the device from the charger, use it until the battery is low, then charge it fully again. By the second charge cycle the IC adjusts its limit and the indicator reaches 100%.
