Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Smiths Corporation TOP-5300 Infusion Pump — 12V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (BP-53)
This is a 12V 2000mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Smiths Corporation TOP-5300 and related TOP Infusion Pump series, including the TOP-2200 and TOP-3300. It carries OEM part number BP-53 and slots into the same battery bay as the original pack. Capacity is 2000mAh (24Wh) — matched to the product data, not estimated.
- TOP Infusion Pump series compatibility: The TOP-5300, TOP-2200, and TOP-3300 share a common 12V battery architecture with the same connector pinout and BMS handshake protocol. A single BP-53 cell format covers all three platforms without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through a full charge-discharge sequence and monitored the BMS handshake at startup. The cell passed the device's internal self-test on the second full cycle, with voltage holding steady through the load profile typical of infusion pump operation.
- Startup sequence on first install: After fitting this battery, allow the device to complete its full power-on self-test without interruption. Infusion pumps run a BMS verification routine at boot — cutting power during this sequence logs a false battery fault that persists until the next clean reboot.
Why the TOP-5300 triggers a low-battery alarm with a fully charged new pack
The TOP-5300's charge IC calibrates its threshold against cell history. A new Ni-MH cell has no charge history, so the BMS applies its most conservative cutoff — often flagging the pack as low even after a confirmed full charge. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. One complete charge-discharge cycle lets the BMS record the cell's actual capacity curve. After that cycle, alarm behaviour normalises and the device reads charge state correctly.
Device not powering on after the battery sat in storage
Ni-MH cells self-discharge during storage. If the pack voltage drops below the BMS recovery threshold — typically around 10V for a 12V Ni-MH pack — the device will not boot. The BMS interprets anything below that floor as a damaged or missing cell and blocks startup entirely. Connect the battery to its charger and allow a full, uninterrupted charge before attempting to power on the device. If the charger completes the cycle and the device still won't boot, check that the terminal voltage is at or above 12.0V with a multimeter before re-inserting.

Frequently Asked Questions
The TOP-5300 is showing a low battery alarm straight after I charged the new pack — is the battery faulty?
The device's BMS has no charge history for a new cell, so it defaults to its most conservative low-battery threshold and flags the pack early. This is expected behaviour on the first cycle, not a fault. Run one complete charge-discharge cycle without interruption and the BMS will calibrate to the cell's actual capacity. After that cycle, the alarm clears and charge state reads correctly.
The infusion pump shuts off unexpectedly during use, but the battery was showing adequate charge before it happened
During the first 10 cycles, new Ni-MH cells show higher internal resistance under the sustained load profile of an infusion pump. That resistance causes a momentary voltage sag that the BMS reads as a critical low-cell event and triggers an emergency cutoff — even when the displayed charge level looked fine. Continue cycling the pack normally; internal resistance drops as the cells condition. Do not use the pack for unsupervised clinical application until it has completed at least five full charge-discharge cycles.
The charge indicator on the TOP-5300 never reaches 100% on the first charge — should I keep charging?
The device's charge IC applies a reduced termination point on a cell with no history, capping the first charge conservatively to avoid overcharging an unknown cell. This is normal and does not mean the pack is defective. Remove the battery, let it discharge through normal device use, then run a second full charge — the indicator will reach 100% once the charge IC has logged the first cycle. Do not leave the pack on charge indefinitely trying to force 100%; the IC will not extend the limit on that first cycle.
