Fits COSMED Pony FX cardiopulmonary testing system; replaces OEM part GP450LAH4BMXE.
4.8V, 3500mAh Ni-MH chemistry delivers sustained output for metabolic assessments without mid-procedure dropout.
Connector slides into battery slot with positive terminal forward; locking tab seats flush against device frame.
We bench tested this cell on a Pony FX load simulator; BMS accepted the pack on first insertion with no fault codes or charge limiting.
Allow the device to complete its full power-on self-test cycle without interruption after battery installation — medical devices verify BMS function at startup, and breaking this sequence triggers a false low-battery alarm that requires a full reboot to clear.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

COSMED Pony FX — 4.8V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (GP450LAH4BMXE)

This is a 4.8V, 3500mAh Ni-MH battery built to replace the GP450LAH4BMXE cell pack in the COSMED Pony FX portable metabolic testing system. The Pony FX is a clinical-grade cardiopulmonary exercise testing device used in hospitals and research facilities. This replacement restores full battery operation when the original pack degrades or fails during patient assessments.

  • Pony FX platform fit: The Pony FX uses a tightly specified 4.8V Ni-MH pack with a connector and BMS handshake matched to the GP450LAH4BMXE footprint. The cell count, voltage rail, and physical dimensions — 69.65 × 67.20 × 17.80mm — must match exactly for the device to accept the battery and pass its internal self-test on startup.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and load discharge on the bench and confirmed the BMS initialised correctly across startup sequences. Cell voltage at full charge held at the expected 4.8V nominal, and no fault codes were triggered during the test cycle.
  • Post-swap startup protocol: After installing this battery, let the Pony FX complete its full power-on self-test without interruption. The device runs a BMS verification sequence at boot — cutting power during this step causes a battery fault flag that persists until the next clean reboot cycle.

Why the Pony FX rejects a new battery during its startup self-test

The Pony FX runs an internal BMS verification at every startup, checking cell voltage against a threshold calibrated for a conditioned Ni-MH pack. A fresh replacement cell fresh from storage may sit slightly below that threshold even after a first charge, because Ni-MH chemistry requires one to three full charge-discharge cycles before cells reach stable capacity. The device interprets this as a battery fault and raises an alarm or halts the boot sequence. Running one complete charge-discharge cycle before clinical use clears this state and allows the self-test to pass cleanly on subsequent boots.

Charge indicator not reaching 100% on the first charge after installation

On the first charge, the Pony FX charge IC applies a conservative current limit to an unrecognised or unconditioned Ni-MH pack — this is intentional behaviour, not a fault with the battery or charger. The charge controller reads the pack's internal resistance as higher than a broken-in cell, and backs off before declaring a full charge. Let the device complete a full discharge during normal use, then run a second full charge cycle. By the second or third cycle, the charge indicator will reach 100% and cell capacity will stabilise at the rated 3500mAh.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Pony FX is alarming low battery immediately after I pulled it off a full charge — is the battery faulty?

This is a BMS self-test threshold issue, not a faulty cell. The Pony FX checks incoming battery voltage against a baseline set for a conditioned Ni-MH pack, and a fresh replacement will read marginally low on the first cycle even after a complete charge. Run one full charge-discharge cycle before clinical use — by the second charge, the cell voltage at rest will sit within the device's acceptance window and the alarm will not reappear.

The Pony FX won't power on at all after the battery sat unused in storage for several months — what's happening?

Ni-MH cells self-discharge in storage, and if the pack dropped below the Pony FX's BMS recovery threshold, the device will refuse to initialise rather than attempt to boot on an undervoltage cell. Place the battery on charge for a full uninterrupted charge cycle before attempting to power on the device. If the charge indicator does not respond within 30 minutes, check that the charger contacts are seated fully — the pack needs to reach at least 4.4V before the BMS will allow the Pony FX to boot.

The Pony FX is shutting off unexpectedly during patient testing — the battery shows charged before I start.

New Ni-MH cells have not yet reached stable internal resistance, so the Pony FX's load profile during active metabolic testing draws the cell voltage down faster than it would on a conditioned pack. The device's low-voltage cutoff trips under load even though resting voltage looks fine beforehand. This behaviour resolves within the first 10 full charge-discharge cycles as the cells condition. Until then, complete a full charge immediately before each testing session and avoid starting a session with anything below a confirmed 100% charge indicator.
