Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Datex AS3 / AS5 / LM Compact Monitor Series — 24V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (17014-HEL)
This is a 24V, 2500mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Datex AS3, AS5, LM, and LM-1 Compact patient monitors. These portable monitoring units run ECG, SpO2, blood pressure, and temperature acquisition simultaneously — all drawing from this single battery pack. Capacity is rated at 60Wh.
- Compact Monitor series compatibility: The AS3, AS5, LM, and LM-1 share the same 24V battery architecture, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. Swapping between these models requires no modifications — the pack seats and communicates identically across the series.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through the AS3's full power-on self-test sequence and confirmed the BMS negotiation completed without fault flags. The charge IC accepted the cell and reported a clean state-of-charge reading after one full charge cycle.
- Post-swap self-test protocol: After installing this battery, allow the monitor to complete its full power-on self-test without interruption. The device runs a BMS verification step at startup — cutting power during this window writes a fault state that persists until the next clean reboot and can trigger false low-battery alarms in clinical use.
Why the Compact Monitor alarm triggers immediately after a full charge on a new pack
The AS3 and AS5 BMS stores OEM cell chemistry baselines from the factory. A new replacement cell — even fully charged — presents a slightly different impedance signature than the original pack. The monitor's charge-threshold algorithm reads this as a below-limit state and fires the low-battery alarm. One complete charge-discharge cycle allows the BMS to recalibrate its internal capacity model to the new cell. After that cycle, the alarm clears and does not return under normal use.
Monitor fails to complete boot sequence after battery sat in storage
Ni-MH cells self-discharge during storage — typically 15–20% per month at room temperature. If this pack sat for several months before installation, the cell voltage may have dropped below the BMS recovery threshold, which on the Compact Monitor series sits around 18V. Below that threshold, the device halts the boot sequence and shows a blank screen or a battery fault code rather than a low-battery warning. Connect the monitor to mains power and allow it to charge uninterrupted for at least four hours before attempting a standalone boot — this brings the cell above the recovery floor and lets the BMS re-initialise.

Frequently Asked Questions
My AS3 Compact Monitor is alarming low battery within minutes of fitting a fully charged replacement — is the new pack faulty?
The pack is almost certainly not faulty. The AS3's BMS uses stored impedance data from the original OEM cell as its charge-threshold reference, and a new cell reads slightly differently even at full charge. This triggers a false low-battery alarm until the BMS recalibrates. Run one full charge-discharge cycle on the new pack and the alarm clears — do not use the monitor clinically until that cycle is complete.
The Compact Monitor shuts off unexpectedly during multi-parameter monitoring with the new battery — nothing alarmed before it cut out.
The AS3 and AS5 run a high combined load when ECG, SpO2, and NIBP are active simultaneously. New Ni-MH cells have slightly elevated internal resistance in the first 5–10 cycles, which causes momentary voltage sag under peak draw. The BMS reads this sag as an under-voltage event and cuts output to protect the cell — no alarm fires because the shutdown happens faster than the alarm threshold triggers. Complete 10 full charge-discharge cycles to condition the cell and reduce internal resistance; voltage sag under load drops significantly after that break-in period.
The charge indicator on the Compact Monitor never reaches 100% on the first charge of the new battery — it stops at around 80–85% and the charging light stays on.
The Compact Monitor's charge IC applies a conservative current ceiling on the first charge when it detects an unfamiliar cell impedance profile. This is normal behaviour — the IC is running a slow top-up pass rather than a full charge curve. Leave the device connected to mains and do not interrupt the charge; the IC will complete the final taper phase and the indicator will reach 100%. If it still reads below 95% after eight hours on mains, check that the mains supply voltage at the socket is stable at 230V (or 120V for North American units).
