Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.
Delivery and Shipping
Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Dell Latitude E5440 / E5540 — 11.1V Li-ion Replacement Battery (VJXMC)
This is an 11.1V, 4400mAh (48.84Wh) Li-ion battery for the Dell Latitude E5440 and E5540 series laptops. It also covers the Latitude 14 5000-E5440 and Latitude 15 5000-E5540. Cross-referenced OEM part numbers include VJXMC, VVONF, N5YH9, and 451-BBID, among others.
- E5440 and E5540 shared platform: Both the E5440 and E5540 use the same 11.1V three-cell battery bay, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. A single replacement cell covers both chassis without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell on an E5440 and monitored BMS communication across the SMBus. The pack reported capacity, cycle count, and charge state correctly. BIOS battery health check passed without flags on both test units.
- First-cycle reset after install: After fitting this cell, run the laptop down to hibernate cutoff under normal load — screen on, a few background tasks — then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the inaccurate health warning that appears on the first boot after any cell swap.
BIOS reporting battery health as poor immediately after replacement
Dell's BIOS reads health data from the EEPROM embedded in the battery pack. When a new cell arrives, that EEPROM contains factory default values that don't match any learned charge history, so the BIOS flags it as degraded. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. Run one full discharge-to-hibernate followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% — this writes a fresh charge profile to the EEPROM and clears the warning. After two or three full cycles, the health indicator should read normal.
Laptop shutting down at 20–30% shown on the fuel gauge
This happens when the fuel gauge IC hasn't yet calibrated against the new cell's actual voltage curve. The IC still uses discharge curve data from the old, degraded cell, so it misreads the remaining capacity. Under full CPU and display load, voltage drops sharply at the real low-capacity threshold before the gauge catches up. Run two or three complete discharge-to-hibernate cycles without interruption. By the third cycle, the fuel gauge recalibrates and the shutdown point aligns with the actual 10–11V low-cell cutoff.

Frequently Asked Questions
Dell BIOS says "battery not detected" or shows 0% on a brand-new replacement — what's wrong?
The SMBus handshake between the pack and the BIOS didn't complete on first boot. Shut the laptop down fully, remove the AC adapter, reseat the battery, then boot with AC connected. The BIOS re-polls the SMBus on a cold start with AC present, which triggers the EEPROM read correctly. If the 0% reading persists after one full charge cycle, check that the battery connector pins are fully engaged — a partially seated connector breaks the data lines even when the power pins make contact.
The Wh rating shown in Dell Power Manager doesn't match the 48.84Wh on the product listing — is the cell wrong?
It's not. Dell Power Manager reads the Wh value stored in the battery's EEPROM at the factory, which reflects the rated chemistry spec rather than the cell's measured capacity at that moment. The EEPROM figure can differ slightly from the tested capacity on the spec sheet. After one full learn cycle — full discharge to hibernate, then charge to 100% uninterrupted — Power Manager updates the displayed figure to reflect actual cell behaviour. No action needed beyond that cycle.
Charge stops at 80% and won't go higher on the E5440 — is the replacement cell faulty?
This is a BIOS-controlled charge limit, not a cell fault. Dell's ExpressCharge and Battery Life Extender settings in the BIOS can cap charging at 80% to reduce long-term cell wear. Go to BIOS Setup (F2 at POST), navigate to Power Management, and check the Battery Charge Configuration setting. Switch it from "Primarily AC" or "Custom" to "Standard" to restore full 100% charging.
