DFI NB6600 / NB6620 — 12V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (DR36)

This is a 12V, 3800mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the DFI NB6600 and NB6620 notebook computers. It replaces OEM part numbers DR36 and DR36S. The battery restores portable operation to either notebook when the original cell has degraded or failed to hold charge.

  • NB6600 and NB6620 compatibility: Both notebooks share the same battery bay dimensions and connector pinout. The DR36 and DR36S part numbers are interchangeable across this platform. The BMS handshake and voltage rail are identical on both machines.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through full charge and discharge on compatible notebook hardware. The BMS accepted the cell without fault codes, and the charge circuit held steady through the full Ni-MH topping cycle.
  • First-cycle conditioning on Ni-MH notebooks: After installing, run one full discharge to the hibernate cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the inaccurate health warning that typically appears after a cell swap on this platform.

BIOS reporting poor battery health after installing the DR36

The NB6600 BIOS reads EEPROM data from the previous cell and compares it against the new cell's reported state. A fresh cell has no accumulated cycle data, so the BIOS flags it as degraded or unknown. This is a calibration gap, not a fault with the replacement cell. Run one full discharge-to-hibernate then a full uninterrupted charge to 100% — the BIOS learn cycle will overwrite the stale EEPROM values and clear the warning.

Notebook shuts down abruptly while the OS gauge still shows 20–30% remaining

The fuel gauge IC on this platform estimates remaining capacity based on voltage curves calibrated to the original cell. A new Ni-MH cell has a slightly different voltage profile, so the gauge loses accuracy in the lower charge range. Under full CPU and display load, the actual cell voltage drops below the cutoff threshold before the gauge reaches 0%. Two to three full calibration cycles — full discharge to hibernate, full charge to 100% — tighten the fuel gauge IC's tracking against the new cell's actual voltage curve.

The BIOS is reading stale EEPROM data left behind by the old cell and comparing it against a new cell with no cycle history. It flags the mismatch as poor health, not an actual fault. Run a full discharge to the hibernate cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. That single learn cycle rewrites the EEPROM reference and clears the health warning.

The OS fuel gauge on my NB6620 reads wildly different percentages every cycle — why is it so inaccurate after the swap?

The fuel gauge IC builds its capacity model from voltage curves it logged on the old cell. A new Ni-MH cell has a different voltage profile, so the IC's estimates are off until it recalibrates. Each full discharge-to-hibernate followed by a full charge tightens the tracking. After two to three complete cycles, the gauge stabilises against the new cell's actual curve.

The system info panel on my NB6600 shows the wrong Wh rating for the DR36 replacement — should it read 45.6Wh?

The Wh figure displayed in system info is pulled from the EEPROM on the old cell, not measured from the new one. Until the BIOS learn cycle runs and updates that value, the displayed Wh will reflect whatever the previous cell reported. Run one full discharge to hibernate and one full uninterrupted charge — the BIOS will write the correct 45.6Wh figure once it completes its learn cycle against the new cell.
