Fits Gardena 8885-20, 8887-20, and 8890-20 ClassicCut hedge trimmers; replaces Gardena BST200 battery pack.
7.4V and 2200mAh delivers 16.28Wh — sufficient power for full hedge trimming cycles on these compact shears.
Slides into the ClassicCut battery slot with alignment guides; connector seats flush and locks with the standard Gardena tab.
We bench-tested this cell with the 8885-20 motor under load — BMS handled the initial trigger inrush without nuisance cutoff.
On first use, run the trimmer at half throttle for two cycles before sustained cutting — allows the BMS to establish motor inrush current thresholds specific to this hedge shear's load profile.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Gardena 8885-20 Grasschere ClassicCut — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery

This 7.4V 2200mAh Li-ion battery fits the Gardena ClassicCut cordless hedge trimmer range. It covers the 8885-20, 8887-20, and 8890-20 models. Capacity is 16.28Wh — matched to the original pack specification.

  • ClassicCut model compatibility: The 8885-20, 8887-20 Set Buchsschere, and 8890-20 all use the same 7.4V two-cell Li-ion pack with identical connector pinout and BMS handshake protocol. Swapping between these models works without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through full charge and discharge cycles on a ClassicCut blade assembly. The BMS held stable across repeated motor-start inrush events and did not trip under normal cyclic cutting loads.
  • First-use motor profiling: On first use, run the trimmer at half throttle for two complete cutting sessions before tackling dense hedgerows. This lets the BMS log the motor's inrush current signature before locking its overcurrent threshold — skipping this step can cause nuisance cutoffs on thick branches.

BMS cutoff on ClassicCut trigger pull through dense growth

When the ClassicCut blade engages dense hedgerow, the motor draws a short inrush spike that can exceed the BMS overcurrent threshold on a freshly installed or storage-aged pack. The BMS reads this spike as a fault and cuts the output rail instantly. This is a protection event, not a dead battery. A five-second release of the trigger resets the latch — the pack resumes normal output once the BMS clears the fault flag.

Charger not recognising a new pack that has been in storage

Li-ion cells self-discharge over time. If a pack sits long enough, cell voltage drops below the charger's acceptance window — typically under 2.5V per cell, or roughly 5.0V at the pack terminals. The Gardena charger interprets this as a fault and either blinks red or does nothing. Connect the pack to the charger and leave it undisturbed for 15 minutes — most Gardena chargers apply a trickle pre-charge pulse to recover cells in this range. If the charge indicator does not switch to solid green within 30 minutes, measure pack voltage at the terminals; a reading above 5.2V confirms the cells are recovering.

Frequently Asked Questions

My ClassicCut cuts out the moment I push it into a thick hedge — why does a new battery do this?

That's a BMS overcurrent trip, not a faulty battery. The motor draws a brief inrush spike when it hits resistance, and on a new or storage-aged pack the BMS threshold hasn't yet profiled that load. Release the trigger for five seconds to reset the latch, then re-engage. After two full cutting sessions at moderate load, the BMS stabilises its threshold and nuisance trips stop.

The trimmer feels underpowered and bogs down mid-cut even though the battery shows charged — what's happening?

This points to voltage sag — the pack voltage droops under sustained blade load, and the tool's motor controller throttles output to compensate. Check that the battery contacts are clean and seating fully; oxidised or misaligned rail contacts add resistance and make sag worse. If contacts are clean, the cells may have degraded from repeated shallow cycling on the original pack. A replacement cell at full 2200mAh capacity at 7.4V nominal restores the voltage rail and eliminates the bog.

The trimmer ran fine in summer but cuts out quickly in cold weather — is the battery faulty?

No — Li-ion internal resistance rises sharply below 5°C, which reduces the current the cells can deliver without tripping the BMS. Store the battery indoors before use and fit it to the trimmer just before heading outside. At temperatures below 5°C, allow the pack to warm in your hand for two minutes before the first cut; this brings internal resistance down enough for normal operation.
